|
|
Im a wally looking to give my kids the chance to develop into groms.
Which board to start them on? This post is related to my post asking which length to get 124 vs 128? http://forums.wakeboarder.com/viewtopic.php?t=52948&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=
Which board to get for my kids.
- My kids are total beginners and will have three-five pro lessons.
- The shop does not have kid boards to demo so demoing is not an option.
- My son is 10 and 72lbs.
- My girl is 8 and 69 lbs. She is tall but not a natural born athlete.
- The boat produces a medium sized wake that is not steep and is wide.
- Our lake is rarely glassy so I want a board that handles small chop better.
- I want a board that will be easy to learn on, is not stuck at a beginner level and they will not out grow to fast.
- All board packages below are $250-300
Which board should I get them to share?
- LF Nemesis 124
- LF Nemesis 128
- Hyperlite State 125
- Hyperlite State 130
- Hyperlite Motive 128
Thanks,
Willsurf |

i would say go with the nemesis because state is mainly focused on toeside tricks
but i would have to say the best beginner board out there is the CWB SOL |

Thanks for the comments Wakemaster!
Hmmm, the State marketing promo video says it has the exact same heelside geometry as the Premier (which is rumored to be good) and additional surface and longer fins for the toeside. As an engineer.. the pitch sounds fair enough to me.
CWB - I checked out the CWB Surge 125 but scratched it from the list because it looked more advanced and structured for a steep, balasted MasterCraft wake (maybe had a 3 stage rocker). Thanks for the tip on the SOL .. the reviews look great. The smallest SOL in 2005 and 2006 I could find are 135s which would be too big for my 8 year old until she gains 30-35 pounds.
Are there smaller CWB boards with the SOL geometry?
Thanks, Willsurf |

hmm ill check their might be some 03's or 04's out there a little smaller but i dont know
the premier is a pro model board so it might be a little advanced for a beginner |

Thanks for the list Wakemaster!
Of the boards on the list ...
- the girl only boards are out.
- I scratched the Surge 125, Nemesis 131 and the Rocker 132 as being too advanced for beginners.
- I have not seen support for any obrien's that would be that would displace the Movtive 128 or State 125/130 as my choice.
So that seems to be it: Motive 128, State 125 or State 130? What do you guys think - which board should I chose?

| at their sizes id go with the 119 motive or 118 nemesis. i learned on the motive but dont have any experience with the nemesis. i think 128 would be a little big for your kids and they would struggle. the motive is a really mellow shape to learn on but it was shaun murrays old pro model so you it's not gonna end up limiting what you can do later on. the state has a three stage rocker and you rely more on your side fins so its a little more advaced then the motive and nemesis. oh ya and the nemesis was froggys first shape so you know that isnt gonna limit you either. |

the state isnt just focused on heelside tricks. its a really good board, and it wont limit you at all, but neither will any of the ones you mentioned. _________________ Leges |

Sorry to throw a new board into the mix, but...
My son is 10 (85 lbs.) and has been riding a 2004 Hyperlite Era 124 for the past 2 summers. He began riding at age 7 on a Hyperlite Voyager 121. When he switched to the Era, his riding really improved. The Era is nice because he can ride it with the center fin if he is trying new tricks (gives him a more "locked it" feel), or without the fin if he wants the board loose. It tracks very well with or without the center fin. He has progressed from W2W to 360's on it and I don't think he'll need a new board until he outgrows it. It is also a great beginner board with the fins on. My 8 year old niece (68 lbs.) can get up on it without any problem and prefers it to the Voyager. You could probably pick one up on Ebay for a reasonable price. |

The state is an Asymetrical board meaning the heelside edge and the toeside edge have a different amount of surface area. Its engineered this way to give a toeside advantage since for most people TS is an awkward feeling.

I would look at the Motive out of those 3 boards. I would not get the state if they are that young and just beginners. It will be better to teach them proper technique than bypass it with the State.
Also if you are looking at 128's check out the LF Evo or Trip Both really good boards. _________________

| I think all of the boards you listed are too big for them. I would look at the 119 Motive or the 118 Nemisis like Headless Chicken suggested. It will work for them up to 105# which will be several years for them. It's what I started my son out on and will use for my little girl. Nice and stable. |

Thanks for the tip Kenny. The have not made an ERA that small since 2004. I looked all over and did not find a good deal yet but will keep my eye out for it.

Thanks for the reply.

Looks like LF retired the Evo and Trip lines but I will keep my eyes open for good deals in short versions.
If I go with a 128 length it will be a Motive.. but then the headless chicken will have my head so I am still looking at shorter models.

The Motive 119 has been out longer so I am guess that is the board you have for your kids.
Saw your location. Im in San Marcos, CA. Where do you guys ride?

Will - we go out to vail in Temecula for local riding. I need to make some time to go ride San V, but just haven't. During the summer we go out to Havasu as much as we can. Sometimes we go to Elsi, but that's in a buddy's x-starr, I won't put my boat and back end of my truck in that green stuff. How about you?
If you're local here, go to Wakesports Unlimited and demo all of the boards with your kids. Tyler is very cool with demo's and exchanges if what you bought doesn't work for them. He gave me the opportunity to use the Motive for a month if I needed to. My son started 2 summers ago when he was 70 lbs and now weighs about 88 lbs and I will get him a bigger board this spring and use the Motive for my daughter (6) this coming year. |

| Also, the family that we typically go with has a 10 year old boy who is also happy with the same board and their 6 year old daughter got up on it the end of last summer. If you get a 128 or so, it may be too much board for your 8 year old to handle and she may not be able to turn over if she ends up face down. |

Hi Greg,
All that success on the Motive 119 for your kids and friends kids is a pretty good testamony for the Motive as a great pick.
I will call wakesport unlimited again and this time ask for Tyler.. thats a great tip.
No green stuff or Paris crowds for me either. We can be found most weekends over 75 degrees out at San V, occasionally El Cap.. and twice a year for 4-5 days at Hidden Shores north of Yuma on the river. Next summer we will expand range and try to a week each at Mead and either Havasu or Powell. In the middle of the summer when San V is flooded with really dangerous novice boat drivers Vail starts to sound really nice.. we might pop for a membership one of these days..
Thanks for all the info!!

Picked up a demo 2005 Motive 119 with 'Mini' sized bindings today. The board is in good shape, the bindings fit both kids well and we love the graphics. This board should last my son at least a season and my girl three or four. We are 'good to go'.
Thanks to everyone for your help!
