|

Hi there looking for a board for my kids. Wooot Wooot. The guy at the shop was just recommending the board he had in stock so I am looking for more input.
- My kids are total beginners and will have three-five pro lessons.
- My son is 10 and 72lbs.
- My girl is 8 and 69 lbs. She is tall but not a natural born athlete.
- The boat produces a medium sized wake that is not steep.
- Our lake is rarely glassy so I want a board that handles small chop better.
- I want a board that will be easy to learn on but they will not out grow fast.
I have been warming up to the LF Nemesis 124/Hyperlite State 125 and Hyperlite Motive 128/State 130. I figured out that length would probably help drive the decision.
Is the 128/130 a wise choice because it will be more stable in less than perfect water and last longer? Or is the 128/130 a bad choice because it will be too big for my 8 year old to handle and have fun?
Thanks much,

| Kids grow fast. Maybe try demo-ing a few boards first if you can? See what they like, I wouldn't buy anything that they're going to grow out of in no time, hell both of them could grow a lot by the end of summer! |

| i would say go for the 128/130 because if you lake is choppy it will be a little easier to ride |

Thats an outstanding tip.
Will the 130 be too much for the little girl to throw around/handle well or do you think it really will not be a problem?
Thanks,

| well i started on a 145 when i was 120 pounds so a 130 for an 85 pound person shouldnt be a problem |

Ya, Im warming up to the idea getting a longer/larger board for them so we can wake board more than just the first hour of the day. The Nemesis 131 seems like it might be too advanced for beginners. That puts me toward the Motive 128, the State 125 or maybe the State 130 if I learned that all that edge/a really tight board is what you want in rougher water.
Thanks much.
This forum is kind of quiet, I would still like to hear from more people.

going for the longer board will give them more growing room, im currently riding a 131 which is pretty small for me as i am around 130lbs. Use the "boardfinder" on the homepage and enter both your kids stats and see what it throws up. Also the longer length will help you daughter out by giving her the option of having a wider stance. _________________ There's nothing like a good old faceplant to wake you up in the morning! |

Ya .. I am pulling to the 128 length. I tried the boardfinder and nothing comes up with thier hieght and wieght. I added 20% hieght and weight and the usual 125s through 130s start popping up.
Thanks much for the reply.

Unlesss someone comes back and says "Your crazy.. a 128 / 130 is way too long to start your 72 lbs kids on" this thread is probably done and the specific board selection thread is still open.
Thanks for your help,

| WillSurf, your crazy a 128-130 board is too big. ive been riding for a while and know that there are no exact weight specs but the bigger is better philosophy that most riders seem to go for doesnt really apply to kids. kids dont have the power to muscle a board around that is bigger then them. i'd look into finding a 118,119(nemesis or motice respectively) it will be much easier for them to learn on. Unless you are really concerned about them getting several seasons out of this board then i wouldnt go bigger than 125. |

Dude, awesome!! Thanks for the "in your face" clear response.
My kids are a little more timid than the norm so I am leaning a little long because I think its more important that they get a stable ride & good early experiences than ability to progress on tricks rocket fast.
Others are supporting your go shorter comments as well making it real hard just to close on that nice Motive 128 deal I found.
Thanks much,

i was responding to this btw. imo you got to treat shopping for kids boards different than for regular wakeboards. You see i can muscle around a board of just about any size but you put a kid on a board to big for them and they are just going to struggle, they are not going to be able to control the board, and they will be at the mercy of what the board decides to do. for example, a common occurence for kids is to end up face down(instead of the normal face up position that you get up in) in the water and they cant turn over by themselves. a smaller board would make this easier for them. if you are worried about stability slap a big fin on the board and drive extra slow.
sorry to hear you found a good deal. but you have a ways till the season starts, you definitely dont want your kids first experience to be when the water is freezing. if you have a boat show in your area, that would be a good place to get a deal on a board. |

Hey Headless,
Seriously, thanks much for your help. I have been leaning toward a longer than 119 board for added ease of getting up and more stability when the water is not glassy. You make a great point that rolling a smaller board over is easier. Buying used boards I could easily buy several sizes so then it just becomes a question of which size I buy first.
Thanks much,

| i would say buy the smallest first so that they can get used to turning it over when they fall because im sure when they first get up(if it's their first time) they will just sit behind the wake trying to keep their balance |

Yep.. I am going to try to close on a board tomarrow.. we scheduled to hit a local shop and have the kids try bindings to go with either a 118 or 119.
Thanks much wakemaster!

Picked up a demo 2005 Motive 119 with 'Mini' sized bindings today. The board is in good shape, the bindings fit both kids well, love the graphics. This board should last my son at least a season and my girl three or four. We are 'good to go'.
Thanks to everyone for your help!
