It is a posative displacement, flexible impeller pump which is driven by the belts on the front of most inboard motors.

It sucks water from the lake (intake scupper through the bottom of the boat) then pumps it through the rest of the motor for cooling.

The lake water usually passes through a filter & the tranny cooler before reaching the impeller where it's pumped to the thermostat & then on to the motor or to the exhaust for cooling.

The rubber veins on the impeller are subject to wear & should be replaced on an anual or bianual basis, as their failure can fry your motor.

yeah, it's it own unit though. It mounted on a bracket & belt driven, like the alternator, or an AC or smog pump on a car. On many you can change the impeller (inside) without even removing the housing from the bracket. The replacement impellers are fairly inexpensive, 20-35 dollars.
