|
|
We have an old fishing boat that if i fix up how i like it and pay for all fixing up i do, then i get free insurance and financial help with getting the motor for it. So i am fixing it up for going out and having fun on the river. I just got the ok from my parents today, and so i should start really working on it next weekend. I am planning on doing the following to it.
Replace all carpet, and also put in floors through out.
Paint outside navy blue, and inside tanish..
Make final pads for the benches..
Install platform/ladder in the back
Instal small sun deck typ thing to step back into the boat with..
Repaint areas on trailer
and put in a stereo,
There's some more but most of it isn't that much work. I should be able to get it all done for under 600 if everything works out. And then just have to get a motor.
I know it's not that great of a boat, but for being 16, the 2 stroke motor will make it where it won't drink gas, and i can at least go out with some friends and have a good time without my parents nagging me the whole time.
Heres pics from today when all i did was take some of the stuff out, but mainly not much.
(And yes it was a hunting boat)
-Chad
I will probably mainly be doing tubing and riding around in it and also a little wakeboarding and kneeboarding if a 35 horse will pull someone up.

AndyDeeJay, LOL. Wakeboarddrumma, But to you good luck that is a project that I know you can do. Have fun with it but one question. How will the speakers be inserted for your stereo? Good luck. _________________ The sky is not the limit. Wanna see me naked? |

Wow. A tubing boat. How lame. Does "final seats" mean "Vinyl seats"? Good luck, though. I suppose you could skate behind it. Pulling a tube is harder than pulling a skater. _________________ PS- this is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

Leave it camo, I agree you should make a I'm an idiot pit with a steering wheel and then you can put your stero there and then maybe a speeker there and 2 up front maybe another one some where else. Looks like a sick project. Have fun. Oh and get a wakeskate then you will have fun hehind it. |

My buddy in college had a boat about like that with a 30hp motor. It took me 30-45 seconds to get out of the water on a board but it would go about 19mph at WOT with a 190 lb person behind it and 2 people in the boat.
Forget the stereo, a 35hp motor will struggle to charge the battery you're using from the stereo. Just get a battery powered boombox. Upgrade to a 40 or 50hp motor so you can board or skate.
I would do the carpet and seating last. Just wear shoes on the boat until you have time to mess with it. You could probably just put some plywood down and staple carpet to it. Shouldn't be that expensive.
Good luck with the project. Should be a lot of fun. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

Wakebrad,
Thanks for that advise. For the carpet, thats pretty much what i am going to do. A stereo is only going in if i have extra money when i'm done. I think i will actually get a smaller battery(golf cart, Mower, plane..) to run the stereo off of since it will be all the way in front (installed in that little storage space. I hope it will be fun As for pulling people, The most it will be pulling should be around 150. (I am most of my friends are 15.. It should be enough power.)
Thanks for all the comments. And yea it was a fishing boat, then a duck hunting boat, and now it will be a general fun boat. (how cheesy was that?)
Painting should be this weekend. |

Wakeboarddrumma,
Looks like you're gonna have a fun time on that project. Good luck with it, keep the camo paint (imo), and definately keep us posted on how it goes. |

lol. sneak up on em! C'mon, you're camoflauged so they won't even see you comin!
I figure there's already a boat out there thats blue, red, black, you name it. but a camo boat? I don't think so! So long as you're not wearing your hunting gear while behind the boat, those ladies will be able to see the stylish riding behind.... behind what?!? Is there a boat out there? How's he do it?!? |

I would lose the camo but only if it doesn't cost too much to change it. Keep it cheap bro. Good luck. Paint it like blue and black. _________________ The sky is not the limit. Wanna see me naked? |

It will be like 25 bucks to paint the outside. And then another 25 or so for the inside. I don't mind it though. I can't wait to have something to have a good time in and chill in. |

I wish. It looks like i am doing some yard work today, and so i think i will have enough money to start painting this weekend. I will really have to clean it up good then get some tape and tape it off also. I was thinking about putting an Orange Stripe, or that auburn logo on it. Who knows. |

Too late now but I would have definetly kept the interior bare metal. My jon boat (just like yours) had paint on the inside and it chips off really easily. Im trying to find a way to get it off (besides chipping it with a screwdriver like Ive been doing) and repaint the outside blue like yours. Unfortunately I dont have a rad trailer like yours. Good luck with it man. I have a 7.5hp and it goes 22 with just me and no rider. I think a 30hp will be PLENTY of power to pull a rider. I wouldnt do a stereo though...it will add weight, add cost, and will take a beating in that small of a boat. Just bring an Ipod on or a boombox. If you wanna do something cool, make a frame so a boombox will fit in the hole in the front. A sundeck probably wouldnt be a good idea since you wouldnt have a place to drive it. I wouldnt put carpet in because it adds cost, will eventually wear away but mainly because the advantage of the jon boat. Pull the plug...add a few hundred pounds of water to the floor, wake=big. With a floor you couldnt do that. To get it out, just put the boat on a plane and pull the plug again. Keep us updated with pics, I want some inspiration. Heres mine if you want any ideas (even though its kinda stripped) |

LFADAM,
I think i am going to just climb onto it on the front . I beleieve it will be a little easier that way. And i guess the stereo can go. Maybe a small sundeck up front?
What size is that boat? Mine is a 16 and my friend has a 16 or 17 too and he can't get his to get faster then what he said to be a dead sprint. So i dunno he had a older 15 |

Great post...
LFADAM, I didn't read the rest of the thread, so sorry If you've already covered this, but have you been able to pull a rider behind your jon-boat? I "inherited" a 14 ft. one like yours, and planning on making it nice, but first I'd like to know If it's actually ride/skate-able. TIA. _________________ www.Tigeowners.com

DavidHoff, well my dad wont let me try. He thinks Ill stress the motor but I havent really pushed it because I have a real boat.
If it helps, it goes about 22mph with only me in it. For every person you add to the boat it slows about 2 mph. I think I could get a person our size up if they are good at getting up (like any rider of your caliber is) so that they create as little drag/pull against the boat as possible. I think with a rider it would only go in the 15-18 ball park but I think it would be ok for a skate. Remember mine is just a 7.5hp. I think a 15 or maybe even a 9.9 would work better. (18-22 range) |

If you did a dock start it would make less drag than a deepwater start.
LFADAM, tell your Dad it wont make a difference on the stress on the engine. It's simple physics, they prop will slip no matter what, the more resistance there is the more it slips. It doesn't load the engine any more.

ballywho, I know and so does he. Its just an excuse because he just doesnt want me using that boat for riding. IDK why. Maybe he thinks Ill tip it when I cut or get back in the boat. Whatever, if I get a drysuit and all of our boats are winterized besides that one (outboard) Ill push harder. I think he would cave. |

Forget the stereo, it WILL get wet if people are climbing in/out of the boat from the water. If you have boards in the boat, they're gonna get scratched w/o carpet. Do you honeslty think you're going to use the boat to warrant spending $600 on? Doubt it. _________________
