| This summer i tried repeatedly and unsuccesfully to get my handle pass down for what should be an easy 360, my rotation is fine, it just seems no matter how hard i try the rope always gets pulled away. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. |

| WachoZacho, take a stick, ruler, pencil, sharp knife (alright maybe not that one) and just practice passing the handle at the small of your back. Most people problem is that when they go for the rotation they keep their hand on the handle and try to bring their other hand/arm in to their body like they are pushing away from something for the rotation. So keep your mind on that, and practice passing things at the small of your back. If you still aren't getting closer with passing it at the small of your back, try to pass the handle under your butt, that is what helped me. |

I used to kneeboard (yeah I know) and I would do surface 3's for hours. Now my handle passes are like second nature. Now I'm not recomending kneeboarding, but maybe do alot of surface 3's just so you get the pass down. Also II try to get a bit of slack in the line for any trick where I will be passing the handle. My edge isn't as hard and I will pull on the handle a little as I leave the wake.

That is hands down the WORST Advice you could ever give anyone who trying to learn spins.
WachoZacho, Please do NOT take ballywho's advice (except for the practice part), it will mess you up big time. Do not spin off the wake, or start pulling the handle early. You need to Pop, then Pull, then Pass. If you get a good pull in then you won't have to worry about the rope being too taught. |

Whoa whoa whoa, I never said spin off the wake. Perhaps I should have said A little less line tension. It makes it eaier for me to get the handle pass without the handle getting pulled away from my body. I shouldn't have said pull either, I think ADVANCE would be the right word to describe the motion. I just ADVANCE on the handle to make me stand a little more over my toes. Is that any better? Am I doing this wrong???

ballywho, can you do a 360? Doesn't sound like it.
Bowen, has it on the spot. Pop, pull, pass. And another thing, keep your head up. If you look down, or over your shoulder it makes it harder. |

I've landed them and rode away, but I always fall while catching my balance. I also do bs 180's with a handle pass. I got them down well today but I couldn't land them blind.

Handle passes are pretty similar through all tricks. You can either do them or you can't. I can do a bs 180 with a pass and I'm fine passing on a kneeboard so I figured my advice would be worth his time. I will try Bowen's advice this weekend though.

Mr. Top Hat:
K-dub, I be doin 10 handle passes off the wake SON!
WachoZacho, I dont know what Bowen really stated, as I was reading all the bs, but here is what I do for my students who are working on them, or wanting to get better at them. Too many riders start their spin to early. They believe rusing the spin will help them land it more often. This isnt true at all; by rushing the spin, you are throwing this entire tricks timing off. Remember when you first started your attempts at wake to wake jumps? It took a while to get all the timing down, and to land them as well. Same logic applies here. The first thing you are going to concentrate on, is the pop. I take it you already have the spin down, so lets move into the actual pass. You want to pass the handle, right in the middle of your back, and keep it close to your body so you dont get pulled back and down. Its pretty much this simple. Things you can try, is hitting the wake a tad flatter, to lose a tad bit of the tension you have built up in the line. You could throw the trick, and pass the handle once you have landed, or just do a surface spin. These add points to your run, but wont help you on the pass itself. Truely, the only thing you can do to get better at this, is keep doing it. You can read and watch vids until your eyes are blood shot, you just need time to get the feel of it.
ballywho, I dont see how spinning yourself dizzy on a kneeboard will help with the handle passes on a wakeboard. The only thing that remotely would help, is to do this on a trampoline, and even then it is pretty much difference. The only time I suggest going to a tramp, is to work on inverted tricks. I can pass a basketball around my body in circles all day long, but that wont make me a Harlem Globetrotter any time soon. _________________

ballywho, no it isnt. Your COG is way different, and the balance factor is not even used here at all. You said it yourself:
| Quote: |
but I always fall while catching my balance.
|
This is because your not doing them right, AND, you are used to doing them with a crutch. You might as well do the damn thing wrapped. I am going to go as far to say is a surface 360 is nothing like a wake 360. He could try and ollie the 3 with the HP, that would be much better practice, but he still wouldnt be getting any better at the timing of the trick.
Mr. Top Hat, you are mean. I like this quality in a message board poster. _________________

I am not aiming to get your balance right with the kneeboard thing. Just the feeling of passing something close to the small of your back while moving over the water.

ballywho, c'mon grom. Anyone that knows something about anything that you post can call b.s. for the most part. Every piece of advice you gave this guy on how to do his handle pass is completely wrong. Which leads me to believe that you know nothing about what you are talking about once again. And, just to be nice, i'll give you the benefit of the doubt on your 180's....but I say no way in hell are they blind.
And, i've never kneeboarded in my life, but I can guarantee that a surface 3 on a kneeboard is nothing like a w2w 3 on a wakeboard. That's just idiotic.
peace and chicken grease. |

ballywho, well then you might as well pass the shampoo around "the small of you back" while you take a shower. _________________

I am also saying that I will try the other advice, I admit that I don't know everything about wakeboarding. I'm still learning and I know Bowen is better than me so I'll try it but that's what's worked for me so far.
Blake, something like Bowen's advice in his first post?

ballywho, I was being a smartass. The point he was trying to make, wasnt a very strong one, but he backed it up with very useful information. Sitting around and passing a handle, is nothing like on the water time, its just that simple. I think people have this illusion about it creating muscle memory, when in fact, no such thing exsists. You are wrong on this, but dont be discouraged and argue your point anymore, just use the information, and get better and do them. _________________

what do you think a bs 180 is?? A "blind" 180....
Landing to blind is not passing the handle...or landing "wrapped" some like to say. |

Love it.
I can't do a handle pass, nor a 360.. so therefore.. I give no advice.
But I must say this makes me chuckle sitting here bored at work _________________ Be an organ donor! My father is alive today because of kind souls that donate life... |

Are you Ballywho's bouncer or something?? I see you stand up for him alot. Maybe you just have a thing for him?? anywho.
wake_quake....did you go back and read your post that I quoted? Key words being:"what he FELT was the easiest way...."
Do you see in what you wrote yourself what the problem is, and why Bally was getting "annoyed"?? |

Ok before I get any further...I CAN do a HS FS 360...I actually do a little of what ballywho is talking about. I use a drift cut, where you basically hold your moderate edge from pretty far outside the wake instead of doing a progressive edge. This way you dont have as much tension in the rope to pass it. I learned this from instructors at camps and I believe from pros in instructional DVDs. It works. Unless your very comfortable with a spin, you dont mack into the wake for it....its a slower edge.
Secondly, I sometimes (when I remember to do it) have my arms almost locked instead of the normal half bent on my cut in. This way after you have popped, you can pull the handle a greater distance to your hip creating more slack making an easier handle pass. You dont have to do that but I find my handle pass is easier when I do.
Those are tips you dont hear as often but I think they are good for troubleshooting. Go out and try your 3s and if the pass isnt coming, try the above. Good luck! |

I too can do a 3, and a 5, so i know handle passes. The key thing in them is to KEEP THE HANDLE IN TIGHT. The entire trick, because if you don't, you're gonna be chasing the handle the entire time. Also, try to keep 2 hands on the handle for as long as you can at first, because it's easier to pull on the rope with 2 hands than it is with one. _________________ www.munsonski.com
