15mph is way too slow. in my experience boat speed is directly related to height produced from an ollie. the faster you go the 'harder' the water becomes (in a sense) you don't want it to be too hard because you want to be able to pop your tail into the water and then up. if youre going too slow you are going to be sittting too low in the water to pop out of.
i would go about 23.
get your ollie down first, you don't need a lot of air but you need to be comfortable with ollieing.
it helps a lot to be able to ride switch a little, just as long as your comfortable with edging switch toeside a little.
to do the ollie 180:
edge out on your heelside edge into the flats, then flatten out (stop edging), ollie, let go with your front hand and tug the handle a little with your back hand to pull yourself around, use your hips to rotate your board and body into the switch position.
there really isnt that much to this trick i was just being specific, good luck, and remember being somewhat comfortable switch will help a LOT

Do you have the latest (I think) WBM? It has an article on ollieing higher. Something to do with pushing down hard on your back foot to initiate the pop. Your rope attached to the bottom of the boat isn't your problem with ollieing. You really don't need that much air for a 180. Just go balls out and swing that board around.

BTW - isn't Lake Erie a bit too rough to ride on? Where is eastlake?

bump your speed up a little to around 18 if you can, that should help a bit. like the other guys have said, work on your surface 180 so you can ride switch. work on your ollie without the 180. then put them together. once you pop up, pull the handle to your back hip and let go with your front hand (you dont have to do it this way, its just a tad bit easier to learn them this way).

i liked the comment about going balls out on a ollie 180. Its not difficult ride anywhere from 18-24. I ride around 22-24 occasionally 20 21 if its something new. natxbrotha pretty much said it's not hard at all. First time i did it i was amazed how easy it was. Just concentrate

welp my speed is the question now. My speddometer say's i,m going 15-18 but i recently installed a new fish finder and the speed on that just seems to fast. Yes lake erie is a bit rough but i'll tell ya, if u get there at about 6:30a.m. it is usually like glass. Eastlake is about 30 min from downtown cleveland. thanx for all the help and with the season almost over here i'll work on both...

Since your a beginner, ride about 18-20 for the ollie 180 and 15 or so for the surface 180 (itll be less drag to slide the board around)

I'd stay maybe 22-23 like bhamglassman said. The more speed, the more pop you can get. For me.. I have almost no height on these most of the time- just a quick little pop to switch.

1. Practice your surface 180's and switch riding.
2. Work on ollies
---------------------
1. Let go with your front hand (right if goofy, left if regular).
2. Ollie and immediately throw your back foot to the front.
3. LAND IT

If you're doing these, try in the middle of the wake, so there's no pull on either side of you.

Once you're comfortable, throw those outside the wake, and then try going down the exit wake or i guess "Wake Piping" it Razz

Good luck bro

less than a month?? you should be able to get it done in one session out... and dont try it in the middle of the wake, you wont have enough slack... cut out on your heelside edge and pop it up and move the handle to your opposite hip

Are you looking down when you're trying to spin? this is what i was told when i was trying ollie 180's. DON'T LOOK DOWN! You don't need to watch the board spin. Like everyone else said, get comfortable with your ollie first, and when you're ready to spin it....keep your head and eyes up, look at the shoreline, and let go with your back hand. I landed my first ollie 180 I tried after that advice. good luck

wake_quake, yea BS is a little harder. Laughing

QNev, that is a factor but the big factor is that the wake gets wider and mushier. The second biggest factor is you dont get as much speed/whip into the wake. Then the pop thing.

ok these guys r telling u to ollie..... first of all when u ollie on a wake it is different from ollieing on a skateboard....when u approach the wake crouching down all u gotta do is stand tall at the right moment and when u do this push a good push of both legs... kinda like getting out of a chair thats how u ollie off a wake.... to get enough air ur boat must go faster or u neeed a better edge

Waker4, I think they are talking about an actual ollie, or bunny-hop, not a wake jump.

Something else you could try, if you feel like you're not getting enough air out of your ollie to flip it around, is trying an inside-out 180. Sit in the middle of the wake, and start cutting back and forth (still staying inside the wake). When you finally have enough speed, cut toward an edge of the wake. I perfer to do it off the wake on my TS, but whatever's comfortable. Ollie like you normally would, and just pull the handle to your hips, and swing your body around. This way, you still have the same basics as ollie 180's in the flats, but you're getting more air, so you can get comfortable with doing 180's.

I found the easiest way is to just ollie, let go of my front hand, and push the handle to the other hip.
