ok so im lookin to learn a HS invert. i tried a few tantrums and just wasn't really feeling it. i think i'd be more comfortable with a backroll. i can alreayd stomp scarecrows and some stuff like that. i get enough air to do a backroll and all that but i just wana get some tips before learning them. so anyone got some tips for learning backrolls before i go and start throwing them?

Just pop, touch your ear to your back shoulder, and spot your landing as quickly as possible. Sounds like you shouldn't have a problem.

it is definitely the easiest invert to initiate. jpminter's explaination is a good one. Keep your eyes open and don't start leaning back too early.

A Backroll is flipping forwards right? Confused
-> http://www.wakepics.com/view_single.php?medid=16511

1. Come in like you'd edge a tantrum
2. 3 Ft from the wake, flatten out your carve without going on your toeside edge
3. Throw your weight forwards to flip while releasing the back hand
4. Look for your landing and stomp it.

Of all the videos i've seen of those they all flip forwards. The tripping is almost the same as the tantrum. I originally thought the forward flip was a front roll coming in heelside but ye...

oh, i might be confused but i thought a backroll was like a reverse cartwheel rotation where you rotate around the handle rather than over it (like a tantrum). also from what ive read, it is not a trip flip.

QNev, you're thinking of a mexiroll (a variation of a backroll in which you flip forward instead of reverse cartwheel) and IMO they are pretty fugly so I would stick with the reverse cartwheel rotation...

The most important thing to completing the backroll is a good progressive edge and holding your edge through the tip of the wake. As you pop try to cut perpendicular direction the boat is traveling. Put your chin to your front shoulder and when in the air keep the handle in tight. As you come around spot the water as soon as you can and hopefully you'll land it.

How do you start the rotation? What do you have to do with your body? I tried this my first time and landed on my back (i have never done any types of flips and such). TIA

Here's what I think about and it's been working for me:

Good progressive edge into wake.
Don't "fall back" to soon, wait till you're off the wake.
When you take off, push the board up and away from you-It should feel slightly like a gainer or reverse off the diving board.
Look back over your front shoulder( the shoulder that hits the first wake first)
Try to spot your landing over this shoulder as soon as possible
Extend your legs into water to absorb some shock.
Ride it out baby!

Hope this helps...so far I've only landed 3 of the them...so I'm no expert.

if you can do a scarecrow you can def do this it took me three times before i landed it i throw my legs back as if i am still trying to cut into the wake if you hold on you will flip first try but if you dont then you will land on your back and thats what i did the first times colin harrington taught me these thanks alot colin h.

you just need a good progressive edge. take a couple warm up cuts, then take that same edge but when you hit the wake edge up and away, i usually watch the board as it leaves the wake to make sure i dont throw it too early. It feels pretty smooth floating around. if you are not getting the full rotation try giving the rope a sharp tug as you leave the wake. other than the edge the most important part is keeping the handle in tight to your waist.

Zerp, All inverts look fugly on the first few trys at them... And The Headless Chicken is correct on this... You are going to have to jerk the handle in and take a good edge through it... However, the landing is going to be the hardest... Like someone I think mentioned, spot your landing asap...

Too many people let the handle get out from them before they start the initital move to get better balance, and this in turn will cause you to get slightly off axis... I truely think the most important thing envolved with this trick though is to just commit to it... You arent going to want to try it in all your sets either. Try to throw it later in your first set, and in your third set... I have seen far too many of the students I work with throw it to quick, bust their ass, and dont try it anymore or they dont fully commit to it... Swing your chin over to your shoulder, and you should ride out with it!

Good luck!
