So, we have about 5 or 6 OLD bottles of vodka... probably 6 or 7 years old... never opened.

Is it still good?

Does it get old?

It depends on the quality of the vodka. What brand is it? If it is Belvedere or similar quality I would be more than happy to determine if it is still good.

Probably won't be much left when I am done though Cool

My mates russian and his parents and Grandparents keep their Vodka in the freezer. It keeps longer and makes it smoother to drink.

I think it should be alright, i have a bottle of Bakers Bourbon thats about 10 years old..

And no alcohol doesnt freeze.

I'm in agreement that it shouldn't have gone bad in that amount of time.

I have a random question on the topic: One of my friends claims that he uses his Britta water filter (charcoal filter) to filter his mid grade vodka (smirnoff) and it makes it taste better. When I thought about it it makes sense that charcoal filtering vodka should help to remove impurities. Does anyone have any experience with this, tried or or have thoughts?

alcohol only breaks down in sunlight (think of wine cellars). so if it was stored in a dark cabinet, you're good to go; brand shouldn't have any bearing on it.

cold won't "keep" it longer since there's no chemical reaction to slow down. airtight is what'll do you in (alcohol evaporates).

crapass vodka + brita = results here: http://www.ohmygoditburns.com/wordpress/index.php?p=4

Its actually temperature that makes wine go off, if you buy an expensive bottle of wine it will having cellar instructions and information with it. Im not sure about the perfect temperature though... Someone may be able to enlighten the rest of us.

Yup... I prefer to keep my vodka in the freezer too...

good martini of Grey Goose right from the freezer is great.

we have some bottles that my fiancee used as 'decoration' on her martini glass collection, and we were thinking of drinking it, but wanted to make sure that it's good to drink first.

I'm definately going to get a seperate brita filter to try...

They did a taste test on the street where they had crap vodka filtered vs. Kettle one and Grey Goose. Something like 8 of 10 all prefered the crap vodka filtered through the Brita.

I like Vodka! I like Vodka in the freezer too. Vodka good.

SKYY Vodka is purified extremely well at their facility in IL. Discovery channel had a show on spirits, it's pretty crazy what they do. SKYY claims to have the least amount of impurities in their vodka.

ABSOLUT fan. Though the Belvidere, Ketel and Goose is good stuff. I never tried SKYY. Is it good anyone?

as long as the cap is on. no.

The only "oldness" would be if the cap was left off completely and that would be due to evaporation.

Much like the myth of "old" beer.

Wine does spoil if it's exposed to light, even if at the perfet temp and humidity.

For the perfect martini, don't freeze your vodka. By simply shaking for 1 minute, you attain the perfect temp. Now straight up and mixed, its great.

Skyy is very good as is Belvedere, Grey Goose, Chopin, Ciroc, Hanger One, and Pearl.

I sat next to this crazy russian at a bar in an airport and guy took me to Vodka 101, and proceded to buy me about 10 shots and get me ripped out of my melon in the process since I had a few already.

Anyways, he schooled me that potato based vodkas are cleaner, have less impurities and will ultimately not give you a hangover/headache because of this, (I agreed when I woke up on the plane). And if I am going to put a mixer, be it water, soda, or even ice that I am ruining "the" vodka, and basically should just buy the cheapest crap vodka out there.

Needless to say after my tasting, Chopin, Luksusowa in the freezer might be the best out there IMO

au contraire, alcohol does freeze. just its freezing point is much lower than that of water and the temp at which most freezers are set... touche

In June on a trip to Cumberland I took 2 bottles that were left over from my parents wedding - 28 yrs old! We found them in my grandmas closet about 5 yrs ago. Man we got hammered!

aceyx, interesting link, i'll have to try it.

wakerider07, must agree with you. i didn't think alcohol froze until i saw a bottle of smirnoff blue (40% abv) that had been in a freezer for two days. frozen right through.

absolut vanilla is an awesome drink

the whole brita filter thing works. i still prefer grey goose or belvedere (and so did everyone i tried this with). for me it made the shtty vodka palatable, but still not as good as belvedere, etc. i actually just got some ciroc as a present. anyone tried this stuff? apparently its fermented grapes or something of the sort...

and ive accidently frozen a 12 pack of sierra nevada before. somehow none of them exploded.

ciroc is pretty nice stuff. has a very slight fruity taste, great for taking shots. chopin probably has the least amount of taste followed by goose. turi and ketel are pretty distinctive. I remember having some one time that had a licorice flavor, can't remember if it was effen or vox.

mbuck,

For one, the cheap vodka blows. Smirnoff is dog sh1t,

Drink what you like, I actually agree with keeping it straight. Out of the freezer in shots is the only way to go. On the rocks with a twist is solid too.

wke3 is right, forget the goose.
