| ok so our goldfish has been laying on its side at the bottom of the tank, panting really hard. Is this a sign of pregnancy/a fish getting ready to lay eggs? The other fish has also been hanging around it, kinda like riding on it. help? |

elyse, uh, if it hasn't already died, it probably will soon. Fish aren't supposed to lay on their side. They have a bladder that controls their position - if it's laying on its side (even if it is laying eggs) the swim bladder may have ruptured and it doesn't have long to live.
Sorry - I hope I'm wrong. _________________ posterior tibial tendinitis = sucks balls |

I cant say that I have ever been upset about a fish dying but you have my sympathy. My dog just passed away last monday and it has been a pretty rough week. STPHNSN23, I didn't even take care of the fish, I can't stand the way the tank and the food smells when you get close to it.
The fish that died was a feeder fish my sister won at a fair. It lived for like 3 years and got to be about 5 inches long, so I would say it lived a pretty good life. |

Goldfish can live for 20 years if taken care of properly.
They don't get pregnant.
Sounds like a swim bladder infection or bloat, both usually caused by neglect and bad water conditions, or by a parasite that got a foothold because of either an illness or a weakened fish caused by bad water conditions.
If your tank smells, your water is being neglected.
I had a cichlid that lived for over 5 years, and when it died, I felt bad. Some Cichlids do appear to recognize their owners and kind of show affection, though.
But I feel a little bad even when a "dumb" fish that shows no recognition or affection dies. I guess I don't base whether I feel bad about an animal's death on whether or not it showed me any affection. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

| I had a fish that was swimming around in tight little circles all of a sudden. He wouldn't eat either so I got my husband to take the cleaver to him. I can't stand seeing animals suffer...........unfortunately, the fish slipped away just before he got decappitated, so it took a few tries before he was dead............poor little guy. |

Very attached! We had a goldfish in college named Sh!$t. It was the biggest damn goldfish ever. It had been passed down from graduating class to underclassman. S#@t was 12" long and at least 3 lbs. Put in a Piranha to see what would happen and true to form, Sh!#t ate it.
Sh@!t finally died after about 10 years. We had a funeral and all. Alumi from all over the state came to pay final respects. It was a sad day. |

Mikey27,
Yes he was a cool fish, amazing what he survived. Not only did he drink his own urine but on numerous occasians (twice weekly) he'd have a sip or two of beer.
No, neither myself or my roommates dumped beer in the tank. Usually it was some effed up party crasher. _________________ I hope the weather is calm as you sail up your heavenly stream |

I am surprised that Sh@!t ate the piranha.
Graduation day in college the guy that owned a huge Oscar and the guy that owned the piranha decided to have a death match. It was over in a matter of seconds. The piranha sized up the Oscar as it charged then quickly swarmed it and bit off every fin the thing had, it couldn't swim anymore and was helpless. Then it turned to an entire blood filled tank as it went to town on the meat of the big guy. And I made $10, because I took the 2-1 odds on the piranha.
Ohh and I am sorry to hear about your goldfish passing.

cameraboy, i didnt even take care of the fish, my mom did. and, my mom cleaned the take once a week, canged the gravel about once every 2 months, and put in fresh water about twice a month. she was a little obsessed.
BTW, our new algea eater died yesterday, and the other goldfish died today. When my madre was getting the goldfish out today, she noticed this red stuff on his stomach, so she went to petsmart and asked some dude about it (the same dude we bought the new algea eater from about a week and a half earlier) and he said that the algea eater may of had some sort of fungus or a disease and it gave it to the other fish. so we have to totally restart and like clean the tank and buy new fish. |

That's actually not obsessed. That's under-maintained.
The gravel should NEVER be changed, but it should be "vaccumed" when changing the water with a siphon once a week. Only change 10-20 percent of the water. "Putting in" fresh water to replace evaporated water does nothing, and in fact, it slowly poisons the fish. You have to take water out manually each week, in small amounts.
check out www.aquahobby.com if you really want to learn how to take care of a fish. it's not that hard, but it does take some time, around an hour a week.
If you dont' want to bother, don't get more fish. And you do, of course, have a good filter and heater, right? _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

cameraboy, sorry i forgot to add, we did have a vacuum that she used all the time, and she would take out about a tenth of the tank and refill it
yes, we have a good filter, but no heater because our fish didn't need one according to the pet store. |

Yea, that's right, goldfish are cold-water fish.
My oldest Cichlid died last night. Ironic.
He was only 5 or 6, though. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |
