I wish I would have taken "before" pictures, but I didn't. My boat is a '99 Supra Santera, and I felt the side compartments needed a bit of an update. They had stretch webbing on them that was sun faded from black to a whitish gray and the stretch was mostly gone. The webbing just kind of hung there.
Also, the actual storage area in there was less than Ideal. It was basically just a canvas pouch stapled on the backside of the panel that just hung into the open space between the hull and the interior wall.
I started by removing the interior upholstered panel, removing the webbing and pouch. I then built a box out of marine plywood that would fit snugly in the space between the hull and the interior wall. This took a bit of customizing and trial and error. A bit more than I expected in fact, since both sides were different widths, which I didn't realize at first. When I got the boxes the right size, I got the idea to make the back of the box out of diamond plate. Great idea, I must admit. So I put the diamond plate on the back, lined the rest with carpet and installed it. Here is the result:

Great looking project. I'd like to create something like that in my boat.

UPDATE: I put a cold cathode neon tube in the compartment and replaced my lightbulbs in my courtesy lights with LED's from superbrightleds.com. Here is the result...... an unintended, but kind of cool effect is the way it lights through the speaker cones.

It's called a "COLD CATHODE" neon tube. It seems to be very durable so far. I bought it from this site: www.elwirecheap.com
