Whats considered good height

I know this may come as a surprise but I'm trying to get different opinions or suggestions.

What would you consider a good height on a W2W?
Im usually getting about 6-7 feet.
Ive been trying to get more but I dont know if my current wake limits it.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Personally, Id say once you get up to or above your tower, its some good air. A beginner might be satisfied with a couple of feet, while the pros seem to be shooting for 60 frames of video (probably 16+ feet)...

Unfortunetly where I ride I dont see anyone getting any higher.

16 feet... yes way. i was at a competition and the announcer said as a rider came down from the double-up, "that was nearly 20 feet folks"

That wasn't even close to 20 feet. The announcer of course has to be optimistic throughout the whole competition. Yes, I'll give it to him, that was a high double up, higher than my 10 AVERAGE estimation. Let's say Adam is about 6 feet tall. In the apex of his jump he's about half that height, or 3 feet tall, since he is hunched over and squatted. Going off this measurement, I can generously say hes 4 lengths of himself off the height off the wake, meaing hes about 12 feet above the water. Not only that, you can clearly see that the camera is mounted ABOVE the tow point, making the background appear lower that it really is, making the rider appear higher. IIRC, Chad Sharpe has the world record for highest double up, I think he was 16 feet, and that was with him laying out a grab. Good jump none the less.

Well, let me clarify. A pro shooting for 16 feet isnt just good height.... Its redunkulous-huge. Im sure your average pro w2w jump is well under 10 feet, but when they go huge off a double up or even the mythical triple up, theyre deep in the double digits. Check out WBM a couple issues ago where they had those sequences from parks double or nothing contest. There was a batwing and a hochie glide IIRC. Both were sick. Both were almost 2 FULL seconds in the air (real time, not suspended animation time like it feels when youre in the air).

EDIT: I do however agree with belmont about the adam video being 12 feet give or take.

GuitsBoy, that's a little different though. The driver was making double ups to be as vert as possible if requested, booting you higher. Not only that, that's repeated attempt after attempt.

Well, I think we're debating semantics now. I didnt mean to say that 16 feet was the norm for a pro. I meant it as an example of the upper eschelon of professional wakeboarders.

Is 16 feet possible? I think we can say that it is possible.

Is 16 feet the norm? Clearly not.

OTOH, I dont think you need to be a pro to get 7 feet. In personal experience, Ive seen even some very inexperienced riders catch up to the top of my 7' pylon without a doubleup, when the wake is huge, theyre approach and line loading is perfect, the speed and pop are just right, the sun moon and stars are aligned, etc.

Yes I have gotten about 6-7 on a good day, actually this weekend.
This is not coming from me but from other boaters. It felt a bit more than usual.

Ive basically been trying to be consistent with it, but not having someone to compare or share knowledge with except here on WB it makes a bit difficult.

This makes me feel better to know that I am doing something right.
Ive tried hitting a double up but my timing sucks -
I appreciate everyones help.

liquidcat, i think 6-7 feet is a very good height. just try and perfect your technique and you might get more air.

I can get 4 feet of air regularly, and 5-6 on my good jumps. My best jump ever was about a 7 1/2 ft. jump (landed way in the flats). My jump off a double up is about 8 ft.

I get about 3-4ft on a normal jump, and like 6-7 off an amazing one. I haven't done a d-up yet so I cant say about that. Also, I am riding behind a outboard with no tower and until yesterday a strechy line.

Whats sad is that all three of those pics are photoshopped. Chad's Tail Glide was huge but not like that. If you look closely you can see the lines where the rider was cut out from the real picture.

I can usually get 5 or 6 consistantly and maybe 7 and 8 on the rare occasion landing way in the flats. It's all in the edge Wink

K-wood Kid, the Chad Sharpe and Vandall pics are NOT photoshopped. I guarantee that. Go grab a copy of Natural Born Thrillaz and you will belive that the Vandall was going that huge. That pic of Chad Sharp is estimated at 32ft. Taken at the Parks' Double or Nothing event a couple of years ago.

prior40, you're off by about half on Chad Sharpe's double up. They said that was 16 feet, a world record.

my biggest jump was last week sometime off of a passing by boats wake. They were doing the surfing thing, so they put up a HUGE wake, it was great fun.

With all the tension and force being exerted on the rope, it's movement in the air when it gets some slack is too fast for the camera to completely stop. The Vandall also rides at about 80' and 28mph, that's a lot of force on the rope.

prior40, where did you get your info? Don't you think 32 feet is a little ridicolous. If you look at the wakeboarding magazine issue that has the double or nothing contest from when that was, it says something like his jump was 16-17 feet, I don't remember the exact number, But here I'll prove it. According to wakeworld.com, that board is a 2004 Hyperlite TFD 142, which is 142 cm long, about 56 inches, or about 4.6 feet. In the paint-shopped photo below, you can see he is clearly 4 equal board lenths from the trough of the wake, straight below him. Those four lines are equal in length and the same length as Chad's board. Anyways, 4 labeled board lengths times 4.6 feet equals 18 and a half feet. I have estimated rounding up decimals the whole time throughout my calculations, and have come to a conclusion which is closer to my 16 feet than your 32 feet. I can't convince you any more, so just look at the damn article and it is right on there. Good day. Cool

BelmontWake, I am sorry if I have bad info, I was only letting you know what I had heard. Anyway, my original point being neither one of those pics were photoshopped. Oh, and by the way, which issue, what page, paragraph and line did it ever actually say what the height was in the mag? Just curious? I have both covering both contests and never does it give any indication of height from what I have seen. I may be wrong. One more thing, no need to get snotty. Just because I may have been misinformed on a number does not give you the right to be a punk.
