Decided after my caffine addiction hit a record 8 Mountain Dews a day it was time to quit. Tried for 4 years to acquire the taste of diet and it just wasn't happening.

Eliminated every other bad habit/addiction without a problem but this is a flat out bitch! My eyeballs feel like they are laying on my keyboard, I have a 100 lb headache fittin in a 2 oz brain, can't think (not that I ever do) and the next person that walks into my office is fired!

How long can it last? Shocked

Alternate Sweet Ice tea between the Moutain Dew.
I recently gave up all flavors of Diet Coke....Cold turkey Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral Neutral
Decided that I wanted to clear all the formaldehdye out of my system Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
I've now switch over to Lipton (Fresh brewed type) Sweet Ice Tea or the Lipton Ice Tea to Go ( (Green Tea with Mandarin & Mango flavor). Works out great since I've got bottled water everywhere in the house and at work.

Dragonlady8,

I quit cold turkey with an homage to my last Dew Sunday night. This is more difficult than my 6 month vow of celibacy in my 20's.

Oh good lord make it stop. Oh it's gonna get worse, I pass at least 12 stop and go's on my way home.

Does Ice Tea have caffine? I've read about how great green tea is for you any particular brand you like? Do quick marts have ice tea--I can't risk being tempted.

lcap, Yes they do have caffiene , but not anywhere close to Mtn Dew.
It's a slow weaning process we're looking for here , Snookums......you're having DT's from that rapid withdrawl Shocked Shocked Shocked
Green Tea is slightly higher than decafe tea but definitely less than regular tea....

I quit drinking all types of cokes about 5 years ago. I occasionally drink sweet tea, but I have to do it before noon or I can't sleep at night.

Heh, in Canada all Mountain Dew is caffeine-free. You'll have to cross the border into BC and smuggle some back.

I did the same about 3 yrs ago myself. I still drink a red bull here and there and I am up all night too.

ICAP
find this stuff called LIMONATA. IT's a slightly carbonated lemonade. It will satisfy all cravings.

Microman, we have caffine in our Mountain Dew now. Well some of the mountain dew. It's called an energy drind now though.

Canada has some stupid law where you can't put caffine in a siturous (sp)pop/soda. If they call it an energy drink they can get away with it though.

Right you are, I think it's called Mountain Dew Energy.

Yeah it's pretty tightly controlled, I believe that caffeine can't be added to clear pop or juices.

Dude I know what you going through. I was around 7-8 cans a day myself before I met my wife and I started to get fat. Than I made the decision to switch over to diet coke cause I still have like 6 cans a day. That alone cut like 1400 calories out of my diet.

I still enjoy a Mt Dew every now and then, but only on special occasions

Cap, I used to have that stupid addiction. Mt. Dew's a biaaaaaaaaatch to quit. I drank probably 4 cans...and a 2 liter a day. What stopped me? I didn't have a cavity till I was 27. I began my Mt. Dew addiction when I was 25 when I started dating a now ex-gf. I brushed my stuff 3-4 times a day and flossed enough to keep the dentist away. But after this 1 and a half year stint? I had 2700 bux worth of damage in the form of decay....under my gumline. Didn't even know it because I was only going once a year for cleanings...dumba$$ me. The first thing he asked was....."do you drink Mt. Dew?" He said I had great hygiene...but the sugar couldn't be stopped at the rate I was drinking the stuff. Not only is the caffeine bad for you.....there's enough sugar in a can to make a candy cane grow outta ya a-hole. Just give it up man. I just suffered headaches for a couple weeks.

joedirt00,

I decided to sit on the bench for awhile after a competition with myself. I wanted to see if I could have enough g/f's to field a baseball team. I got up to 7 and couldn't keep track. Needed six months to rest my brain.

microman, Bambamski,

Only in Canada can you hire a hooker, pick up codine at the stop and go, smoke dope on a city street but you can't buy a Mt. Dew with caffine!

Leggester,

My wife thinks I still have a few too many vices! Damn did I spell it wrong in the title?
Oh this is not good. But I'm getting old enough my body can't tollerate the abuse. Wan't to get down to 12% body fat and stay there.

cracka_barrel,

Two weeks! Shocked

Mountain Dew is my kryptonite, always has been. For most of my life I's take an ice cold Dew over anything! And I mean anything.

Gotta go to bed now, have the shakes and I can't see very well.

Tomorrow will be better

lcap, The headaches shouldn't last too long (mine were over in 5 or 6 days). I cut caffeine out completely 2 years ago. used to drink coffee, soda, mountain dew all day long, and end my day with a couple more cups of coffee at night. Now I mostly drink water. Green tea is good for when you need a little kick, not much caffeine there, and I occasionally indulge in caffeine free diet sodas. The hardest part is eating out (lunches). It's impossible to get anything but water caffeine free in a restaurant.

You will feel better once you get past the withdrawals. I'll never go back now.

I used to drink Mt. Dew too. Had about a 3 can a day thing in college. I've switched to tea when I'm out. At the office I have to have coffee though. I've tried just drinking tea in the morning and I fall asleep every time without coffee. Even with Earl Gray Tea I'll fall asleep. 2 coffees is just enough to keep my eyes open till lunch. Lunch messes me up, pretty much no matter what I eat. Damn office jobs.
Oh, and pop in general will turn my stomach, especially Mt. Dew, Pepsi and Coke.

Fuse has some great teas, Arizona makes some good ones <--Try the Asian Plum Green Tea, or the Palemegranite one.

It's amazing how fat you can get from drinking pop/soda. At least cut it out for the sugar content.

lcap, thats funny...the only thing I have ever felt like I was addicted too was Mt. Dew. I bought a 12-pack one time and put it in my fridge...I found myself waking up at like 5 in the morning craving the dew so i would go in the kitchen..shotgun a dew, then go lay back down. The when I woke up to get ready for work, I would have another one. The when I got home....well you know how that goes...

Well, that was the last time I brought homw Mt. Dew...For about 5 days, i was addicted to the stuff...gave it up cold turkey...now I only drink it when I got to Taco Bell! HAHA

In college, the basketball coach made us all quit soda. Not so much for the caffeine, but the carbonation. We could have milk, juice, koolaid, sport drink or tea. it was very hard to quit, but once I did, I never felt better in my life.

My current issue is not drinking enough during the day. Since Im not as active every day like I used to be, I dont really get thirsty. I have a soda for lunch and one for dinner, and thats all the liquid I drink. I drink sport drinks when playing, but other than that, I dont ingest water just to do so. i try to make myself drink a glass during the day, but when I leave the office, the glass is still half full. Sometimes I wake up at night dying of thirst and I kill several big glasses of water, then go back to sleep.

While I still drink and smoke, I haven't really eaten sugar or had a soda in 15 years.

No cookies, brownies, pops, cake... ...

No pop - except with Jack Smile

In college I used to drink 6 two liter bottles of coke (off brand cola actually) a week + any that I would have with lunch and dinner. I would just constantly pour. The things were only 54 cents a piece. It was THE cheapest thing other than water I could drink. Anyway, it was definitely not healthy and since then I've gotten rid of all soft drinks from the house. Now the only thing I have at home is water. So that's all I drink. I'm used to it now. I'll have a coke with dinner if I'm out sometimes but it's not the craze it was before. I feel so much better over-all and don't always have that sticky gross feeling in my mouth all day.

If I worked at an office (like most software people) where they have free drinks and snacks I don't know what I'd do. If it's there I'll drink it. I guess that explains why so many software people are over-weight.

Good luck lcap!

churchy, yes... he was peeing razors I think.

Wakebrad, I've got the same problem with coke ...still. But I try and drink a lot of sugar-free cool aid type drinks so I'm not as thirsty... only problem is that I go through litres of that stuff.

I gave up all carbonation for new years 5 years ago...it seemed like everyone around me had family members getting kidney stones (my dad got them too, same with my tutor, and then I saw the friends episode where Joey got them) and I didn't want them, I did some research and found that carbonation could be a large part of them. So I stopped drinking carbonation, I started by getting rid of all cafine, then I would have like one sprite a month, now nothing (unless there is alcohol mixed in that is) but the occasional redbull, which sometimes does have alcohol mixed in. My only caffine is the occasional redbull/monster (mainly during exams) or occasional frapaccino from starbucks. I'm glad that I hate coffee too, b/c I have a roomate who spends $10 on coffee a day, sometimes more.

Earlier this summer I got a random craving for Dr. Pepper, so I bought a six pack...I felt so bad after drinking it...my body just wasn't used to taking the carbonation.

Oh the Taco Bell Super Size Dew. For some reason they have the perfect mixture of syrup and with just the right amount of ice.........Add three taco supremes with the crisp little tator tots. What a perfect mental picture, I can almost taste it.

Today feels a little better than yesterday. My eyes only loose focus every now and then. Took me 20 minutes in 7-11 this morning to focus my attention on the ice tea section of the cooler. Couldn't decide between Snapple and Liptom. I wen't with Liptom. As a treat I wen't for the sugar version. I'll see how it taste at lunch. Sitting in the fridge surrounded by ice cold Mountain Dew.

Had no idea caffiene and sugar were so powerful

I used to drink a ton of Dr. Pepper throughout high school and about three years ago I just started drinking water instead. I started drinking Dr. Pepper again, and kicked it again - I think if you feel you don't need it you can quit easier. I feel so much better when I have been drinking water and I am completely hydrated. I can tell now even when I'm slightly dehydrated. I drink Diet Dr. Peppers occasionaly, but I start feeling like I'm on crack or something. Your body is what 80 or 90 percent water anyhow, so drinking water allows your body to perform at it's optimum. I usually drink 2 gallons of water a day, and when I am at a resteraunt I can drink 5 or 6 big glasses easily.

My friend the other day told me that your body could only handle 30 oz of water at a time and I told him I could hold more. Anyhow I ended up drinking 100 oz in 15 minutes, not the smartest thing I have ever done Laughing I don't know if it should worry me more that I drank 100 oz or that I only pissed 3 times.

nashvillematt,

Yea people have died from massive amounts of water. 100 ounces is a little under a gallon and I hadn't had any water all day, and I'm used to drinking 4 or 5 50 oz bottles throughout the day. It was still dumb. I know it can cause an electrolyte imbalance.

brad ruleman, Wow! I'd be worried about your kidneys long-term. 2 gallons/day!? I thought the recommendation was like 2 qts. Man, you must spend a lot of time facing the wall...
