Kites are like tennis shoes. Some are more expensive, some are less, but the ultimately all perform the same. I like BEST Kiteboarding (link in my sig). They are much less expensive than the rest, and just as high-quality and durable. They just sell direct without distributors, so the cost is much less. Other brands have many hands to pass their product through and it ramps the cost up quite a bit.
Also, consider your local shop. Some can be competitive with their pricing and you have that face time and help that is good along the way.
But first, you will want to buy some used gear. Go to www.iwindsurf.com and look in the classifieds to get cheap used stuff to learn on. After you beat them up learning, then buy some new gear. Stick to BEST, North, Slingshot, and Naish brands between 1 and 3 years old. _________________ TONA

A used kite setup will be from $100-$500 depending on size and brand, and a new kite setup will be between $300-$2500 depending on brand. _________________ TONA

kite size is basically a preference based on how much you weigh, how much power you want and how much wind you have. therefore, most people own several kites so they can ride in different windspeeds with different amounts of power. At 150lbs, you will be on 12m mostly for winds from 15mph to a little over 20mph. Now if you want more power in less wind, consider picking up a 16m. Also once you get around 25mph, that 12m might start to get hard to hold. therefore grabing an 8m is good as well. The average kiter has 3 kites to his name, but they all start with one. Start with a 12m, and when you get frustrated in lighter wind, pick up the 16m. When you get frustrated when your missing windy days because they are too strong, pick up an 8m.
Now it also depends on what size baord you ride. Since you arent concerned so much with wake pop, you dont have to ride a big board. Many people ride on boards the size of wakeskates or smaller!! Smaller boards require more power. opposite of that, bigger boards require less. Instead of travelling with 2 kites, some travel with 2 boards. they ride their 12m on the big board from 10mph til about 15mph, then instead of switching kites, they come in and switch boards to a smaller board. This adds range to each kite. _________________ TONA
