I posted this already once but now i need some specifics.

I am buying 65 ft. of a sailing line called yale light which is a spectra core with a poly pro cover. I know someone who can splice the exotic lines so thats out of the way. Now for the questin, what diameter line does everyone think I should get? I was thinking 1/4"?

Also if anyone has an old handle PLEASE post in the other topic.

Dude 1/4" is THIN!!! Think about how small that is. Either way thats the thinnest I can buy it. If you really think so i'll look elsewhere though.

ballywho, quarter inch is pretty damn thick.

Tyler~Moore, yeah, doesn't make much sense unless your time is only worth $.25/hr. Whatever floats the boat. Neutral

Yes its alot cheaper. I'm getting a line (70 ft) for 40 bucks. Right out of the box. If you can beat that I'd lik to see where. Acually the splicing's free too.

How much thinner do you guys want it??? I cant imagine any reason for a thinner line.

I'd go with the 3/16". I think it would be strong enough and you could probably get it for under $30.

The price only changes by like $.02 a foot so i am gonne use this as a multi purpose line, it'll be the new sheet for my laser (sailboat).

wakeboardz087 did you even read my post? Its a SPECTRA core with a poly pro cover. It will accually strech less than a wakeboarding line because there's more spectra than cover. Where would the strech come from?

Oh, I thought the difference was more like $.20/foot. Also the lighter line would be better for wakeboarding. I can appreciate the dual capability though.

Would that 1/16" really make that much of a difference? Why does it matter to make it lighter anyway?

No matter what it'll be better than my Hydroslide 3/8" POS poly pro line that I have right now. Laughing

I'm sure it won't make a huge difference but the best rope would weigh nothing so that it would never sag in the middle. When it sags in the middle, it's the same as being stretchy. When you add tension, the force has to lift the sag out of the rope before it will pull you. Imagine trying to wakeboard with a chain. Of course, that's just in theory. In reality, it's probably not even noticable. If the 1/4" is almost the same price and is better for your application, go with that.

"...doesn't make much sense unless your time is only worth $.25/hr." That means unless you make $.25/hr, it'd make more sense to put in another hour at work, and pay the extra 10 bucks to get the Get High line.

However, you've inspired me, ballywho. I'm gonna go make my own bindings. I priced out the materials, and it all came to about 230 bucks. The gators I was looking at were $234.95. If anyone can beat that, I'd like to see where.

Plus, he's only 15. I know that when I was 15, I got something like $6/week for allowance and I wasn't allowed to work because it might interfere with school and what not. If he's in a similar situation, I'm sure $10 plus whatever a separate rope for sailing would cost, is significant. Not every teenager is given...err...excuse me...can afford to buy (on their own) new Super Airs, trucks, equipment, etc. IOW, stop trying to be such an elitist know-it-all. It doesn't impress anyone (except maybe liquidfool?).

Oh man Bruky, Your sooooo cool!!! I wish I were as cool as you. Rolling Eyes Maybe you can afford to buy everything on your own so whoopdy doo!! I cant. -=Lonestar=- is exactly right. Besides, -=Lonestar=- in almost all of these people's cases, I am pretty sure that given is the right word. Besides, Bruky, like you told me, you're sponsored so the gators you were looking at are free to you, right? Unless you lied and you're just some rich b!tch that had his parents give him everything he wants. In that case then just have mommy and daddy put it on the tab and give them to you. Personally I dont get any wakeboarding stuff given to me. I buy all of it with my own money. So basicly in case you didn't get the idea of this post... STFU! If your gonna be a smart @$$ then go make jokes to your loser friends, they'll laugh... but only because you have the cash to take them out on your wakeboat.

Liquidfool, like I told stanfield $40 is still less than 65.00. Also I never shop at anything marine other than my parents store so...

Let us know how it works out, would be interested to hear. The only place you might get it cheaper is on Ebay. Especially in a month or so. Also, let us know on how well it floats.

Good Luck

Check out sampsonrope.com they have instuctions on how to do splices on all types of rope. If i was you i wouldn't go with a covered line go with all spectra. The spectra gives the strangth and resistance to strech, the cover is for abrasion protection. Plus splicing covered rope is a lot harder then a simple spectra 12 braid splice. You would want to go with 1/4 if you go with the covered and get the same stregth out of 1/8 12 braid spectra. because of the thickness of the cover. I work at a sailing store in seattle so i've been making my own lines for a while. I'll make an 80' line with three take offs for $20. It is the way go.

that would be a terrible rope to use as a sheet... way to thin i wouldn't want to be holding onto that for very long

Jeff206, I dont know what your talking about. I use 1/4" sheets for alot of sheets, they run alot easier than 3/8 or 5/16. The kite sheets on all of our club 420's are 1/4'' dacron braid. The spectra isn't really necissary for my laser but it makes me feel cooler Cool .

Masonwakerider, I wanted the cover to make the line float, and also you should know that sprcta is extremely vulnerable to UV rays. The poly pro cover takes the beating. I plan on buying a new line every 2 seasons, 1 with the cover and then strip it and ride for 1 w/o a cover.

ballywho, worked at a boardshop and I got them at cost. Working is different than sponsorship, and cost/invoice isn't free, it's what the dealership pays for the gear.

We don't live in Mexico. You can make $10 bucks pretty easily without selling illegal substances, and you DON'T NEED A FULL TIME JOB. The kid could have made the extra $$$ in the time he's spent on wb.com alone mowing lawns.

-=LoneStar=-, a job interferes with school? What did you do with the 4-6 hours of DAYLIGHT*** after school that would effect your academic life? It's news to me that working when you're 15 is unnappropriate. Are we just lazy...?

Haha, this is all a joke, right? You got me...hahahaha

My spectra rope is 3/16 " thick. That is slightly less then 1/4". 1/4" should be fine.
