I was watching the ESPN College football special yesterday evening and it reminded me how much I love the college game.
Arizona is coming to town in less than a month… Though the University of Utah may never see another season like last year, I am still pretty excited to get back into the swing of things.
Early season predictions anyone?

I hate team sports especially the college variety.
What is the fascination with college sports? I went to a big 10 school and hated it there.
Not hatin EJ just curious.

I think everything about college sports is better than the pro game(not that I don't love pro football as well, just at a lesser level). The whole pageantry aspect of it....wins seem bigger, loses seem more crushing. On the field there seems to be a bigger sense of urgency. In college football one loss can knock you out of the big picture unless you get lucky.
I could go on and on....but the fact is, trying to explain your enjoyment of something to someone who does not love it is impossible. It is like you trying to explain your enjoyment of wakeboarding to someone who doesn't like boats.

The excitement in a college football stadium is unmatched, IMO.
I'm looking for an ACC championship out of Virginia Tech. We did it last year, the first year in the ACC. We were picked last year to finish 6th in the ACC, nope, #1. This year we are expected to win our division at least. ACC has 12 teams now so they have 2 divisions

muckmeister, hmm my guess is you're going to be in the minority with that viewpoint. I'm sorry that you hate team sports that is kind of rediculous, would you mind explaining why?
Nothing like a football game in Pullman, Where the stadium capacity is higher than the year-round population of the town. Of course when I say "nothing like a football game in Pullman" it doesn't mean much because there really is nothing else in pullman...
early season prediction: no way anyone is touching USC

when we won the national champion it was so crazy in new orleans cause we have never won one title with any team in new orleans.

Well, I played both team and individual sports. Indv just seemed more competitive and more fulfilling.
I guess it comes down to this. My friends will spend their entire weekends in the house in front of the TV watching college on sat and pro on sun.
Get your fat a$$ off the couch and go outside and do something with your sorry life (IMO). I can respect the game but the time spent to watch others is a waste. I would much rather be outside doing something rather than watching my waistline grow on the couch.
I asked a friend of mine who has action on every game and fantasy going. If the sport is that exciting why do you need the action? I asked him if he could watch a game with no action or fantasy, he replied honestly "NO". Kinda sad. I can at least watch an entire Da Bears game and enjoy it.
I know I am in the minority here.

Milano27....I have seriously been considering trying to get down to the LSU vs Florida game. Good excuse to hang in N.O. a few days, plus I want to see what Meyer can do with Florida.
N.O. is so fun when a big team comes to town to play LSU.
Word is that LSU is stacked.
P.S. Anyone who wanted to tell me that LSU is in Baton Rouge...I am aware of that, but anyone in their right mind is commuting from N.O.

chipsevila - Yeah, too bad NC State had to go and put a hurting on VaTech last year. Actually, can't believe how close the game was turned out. We were dominant on defense, but our offense was worthless. Only a couple more weeks before the season starts. Should be a good gauge of how the season is going to go. Can't wait, got my season tickets, so I'll be front and center for the Hokie beat down.
But in general, like EJ said, you either like college sports or you don't. Personally, I enjoy college sports much more than pro. Atmosphere and fan support for "your" school just makes it all the more fun.

I do enjoy college hockey over pro hockey, but I will not stay in to watch it or plan my day around a game.
And the office pools are annoying. Finally after three years of saying NO NO NO NO NO NO NON ONNON OHNONIONONONONO NO. They finally leave me the F alone.
Did anyone watch Bode Miller win the World Cup? I didn't think so. Anyone know who he is? Didn't think so.
Again not hating, but I really have not heard a compelling reason why college sports are that enthralling
Love to watch the Xgames. I think that is the true essence of sports today IMO.

buckshot, I'm supposed to go to that game. I'm kinda bummed that we won't make it. We missed last year's game because of a boat show. This year, we are with my parents for labor day weekend.
I'll either be watching on TV or listening on headphones. Can't miss the season opener against a worthy opponent!!

Muck....I think it boils down to the fact that you seem to be wanting people to convince you that team sports are enthralling. As I stated above, I don't really thing it is something you try to convince someone of. You love it, like it or you don't, no big deal either way.
Not in the debate club....just want to talk a little College Football.

E.J.,
Just my friends. They are the washed up HS football players that peaked in HS and are trying to relive something. Again not hating, just dont get it.
I could name a number of reason why I love wakeskating. Thats easy.
But these guys are not even into teams any longer. It's all fantasy. Fantasy to make it more exciting? Then it must be boring to begin with.

Why I love College Football, by ChipSevila:
1. We have a great tailgate crew. Always in the parking lot by 8 for a 12 o'clock game.
2. I don't get to see most of them except during football season.
3. I get to root for the Hokies (love that one!!)
4. When I was a freshman at Tech, we won the Sugar Bowl against Texas (start of a great program)
5. When I was a Senior, we had a very good shot at the National Title (lost it in the 4th qtr)
6. The band gets everyone fired up with fightsongs.
7. The cheerleaders are trying to pump the crowd with their signs
8. One side of Lane Stadium shouts "LET'S GO" the other side replies "HOKIES"
9. Enter Sandman comes on the PA, the whole crowd is bouncing.
10. Finally the Hokies come tearing into the stadium to thunderous roars
11. Come on, wouldn't you root for this guy:

does anyone else think it's ridiculous that the SEC has 4 teams in the top 10? There is no way that they are going to be THAT much better than every other conference out there especially when USC's going to take the title again.

Dpierce37, & E.J., Vince could have a monster year. If he can beat OU this year then he could have a chance at the heisman, it may be a long shot with USC's QB & RB and OU's RB but he could be the mix of things. They have a tuff test in Ohio State in game one though. Bring on eATMe

chip * wakechick - You do realize your mascot is a castrated turkey, yes?
Sandman's not bad, but wouldn't you rather your team came out to a little "Bodies" by Drowning Pool? That one definitely gets the crowd pumped.
There's a bunch of VaTech and NC State alumni where I work. Always have to talk a little trash. On the bright side, at least there haven't been any UNC people posting. They're the worst kind.

www.hokiesports.com wrote: | WHAT'S A HOKIE?
The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body.
Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Hokie" yell which is still used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics.
The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The colors were chosen by a committee because they made a 'unique combination' not worn elsewhere at the time.
The official definition of "hokie" is "a loyal Virginia Tech Fan".
Virginia Tech teams were once called the "gobblers" because the athletes were spotted in the mess halls gobbling up all their food as quickly as possible to get back to practice! Hence the turkey reference. |
So you see, it had nothing to do with castration! I just supplied this info so you don't sound so ignorant in the future
Our stadium actually has "Home of the Fighting Gobblers" on the face of it.

Haugy,
WAR EAGLE!!! I agree, but i am a little worried about who is gonna be runnin the ball. We have the wigger (AKA Tre Smith), Didn't we keep Slauighter? But still we don't have anyone to compare to Ronny brown. And yes i meant to not refer to caddillac. If we beat bama, i'll be happy. But it sucks trying to rub it in when we beat bama, because that just say 12. I mean, we have 1/2 of one in 1957.
