I am not really new to wakeboarding, only new to the terminology, what is a progressive edge I see a lot of people talking about it.

building speed 'progressively' as you edge into the wake
look in the trick tips section. there is a much better explanation there.

its when you carve away from the wake (outside it) then you get pulled back in to it for speed to hit the wake. the closer in you get, the more speed you get, hense the name progressive edge.

No building tension in the rope. Speed is a byproduct it's the tension your after.

Neutral Question your smart person lingo confuses me lol. i like your avatar. oh yeah, i think i sorta get what your saying, but i meant going far from the wake puts more tension on the rope, which pulls you back in when you stop edging away from the wake. then it starts to speed you back to the wake.

The trick tips section (]http://www.wakeboarder.com/display.phtml?a=50) has a good explanation:

Quote:
A progressive edge is when you edge on your wakeboard and build up the amount of edge slowly, so that your maximum edge is when you reack the top of the wake. By "maximum edge" we mean that your speed and line tension are at their hardest when you reach the wake.

Think of how a pendulum swings. As it goes out to it's highest point, the ball on the pendulum is moving at it's slowest. When it swings back towards the bottom, it starts slowly, and builds up speed "progressively" until it's at it's fastest point at the bottom. In wakeboarding terms, the wakeboarder is the ball cutting out wide, and you want to wait for the boat to begin pulling you back towards the wake, as it starts to pull you, you begin edging in with the proper body position, and build your edge so it's at it's hardest as you reach the wake, which is the bottom in our pendulum example.

So what you want is to be pulled towards the boat (=rope tension) as hard as possible to get pop, not just speeding across the wake. That is why angling away or bending your knees whill still wizzing by at high speed will not give you pop.

Better?

think of the "feel" of a progressive edge like this:

imagine you're trying to pull the boat back by pulling on to the handle. obviously, the boat weighs more than you, so you'll need to dig in the edge of your board. since the boat is moving forward, pulling the boat back is going to get more and more difficult. you will have to push with your legs (to get the edge in), and pull with your arms.

the angle of the board has more to do with the speed at which you build up tension, rather than a direct relation to airtime.

once you get the feeling, it's like riding a bike.

If I understand my instructional videos correctly, progressive edge is setting an edge angle outside the wake and keeping that angle constant as you approach the wake, thereby progressively increasing pressure on the board, tension on the rope, and speed.

The Book and Higher Learning DVDs go into it in depth. The Book also goes into two other types of edging techniques but I do not remember what they are at the moment.
