Hi guys, I've been wakeboarding for like 2 months now carving very well and can do surface 180's and ride switch fairly well. I just can't seem to jump wake to wake. I have included a video of several attempts of jumping the wake. I wasn't jumping hard because I'm still trying to get a feel for jumping and don't want to kill myself....but i was trying to jump. Can you guys please critique my riding and show me where i'm going wrong? Thanks.

Looks like a nice spot to ride! Here's two things that I see from the video. First, you are not really edging into the wake. You are riding with your board flat on the water - you want more of a "dig your heels in" kind of feel. I think it helps beginners to go out to the other side of the wake and practice their heelside edge carving away from the wake. See how much of the bottom of the board you can point at the spotter- lean against that rope and EDGE. Second, you are bending your knees at the wake and "sucking up" the power and lift of the wake. (Some will critique the wake but lots of people ride on something similar to get started.) At the wake you want to stand up. You should try to come in slightly bent at the knees and slowly open your knee angle as if getting out of a chair as you hit the wake. Good luck and post again with a video update.

I don't know who this guy is - I found the picture in the picture file on this website - but it illustrates what a moderately aggressive toeside edge looks like. See how the bottom of the board is out of the water? Hit the wake like that (heelside) and you will get a lot more pop.

Thanks man. I can do a really agressive heelside edge but I was just trying to ease into it to get started jumping but was counting on more air than what I was able to get. I will try a more agressive approach to the wake next time I go out. I will also update with a video. Smile Thanks for the help again.

i had the same problem you did for a while. you do need a much more agressive cut but it looks like your wake is really small. tell the driver to put the trim up while your riding. i couldn't go much further than you but when the trim is up im able to go w2w. i think it makes a big difference. so def try that. and also i noticed yuo're riding through the wake crouched so remember to stand straight up when u hit the wake so that you dont absorb the impact you'll get alot more pop

good luck man

Just another tid bit... try cutting further out so you can gain more speed when cutting back toward the wake.

Also, try to spring (pop) off the top of the wake. I also noticed that you legs were bent pretty much the whole time. It will take some practice and timing, but once you get the timing down, you'll get significantly more air time.

like everyone said you should practice popping off the wake (instead of absorbing it as you ride over it) it sometimes takes people a long time before they are able to jump wake to wake so set goals for yourself that are more within range like jumping half way across the wake
As you get better at popping you should start cutting harder into the wake
Practice will help a lot...

Straighten your legs and ride up it...You want to look like this when you are popping off the wake.

This is of course after you have a more aggressive cut.

make sure you stand up straight at the wake so you get pop and dont bend your knees cuz youll completeyl absorb the wake. the first time i took an aggressive cut i got 5 ft of air and did a faceplant and i got right back out and did it again Laughing but i just kept tryin and then got a w2w so yeah.make sure you know where to hold the rope that was my problem.

This is a summary of what everyone said in a nice short package. Plus a few more tips from me.

1.) Shorten your rope about 10 feet.
2.) Cut out farther
3.) Edge in harder with a good progressive edge
4.) Stand tall at the wake
5.) Trim your boat just below half way.

Good luck!

i say almost the exact as LFADAM, but with one addition and one small change
1.) Raise the speed of your boat
2.) Cut out farther
3.) Edge in harder with a good progressive edge
4.) Stand tall at the wake
5.) Trim your boat just below half way.
6). shorten your rope a little bit

i agree exactly with numbfoot, but with one addition. try and get some sacs or a bunch of people to go out in the boat to help give you a bigger wake. it helps a ton
