Anyone got some informative links on fat sacs and their usage? I ride off my dads boat, and while he let my brother and I build a pylon for it, he dosnt think adding ballast is a good idea. He thinks it will be too much of a strain structurally and on the engine. How can I convince him otherwise?

For the time being I pack as many people in the boat as I can, but its usually not as many as Id like since its a 4.5 hour road trip to the lake house from where I live, and not many of my friends have weekends free.

GuitsBoy, just try to get sacks that will fill up to the amount of weight people would add up to. If you're under your weight limit of the boat it is no different than the strain put on the boat from having 8-10 people in there.

Tell your dad you only want to use them when there's not many people on that boat and you won't go over the capacity weight limit. The boat is certainly designed to hold at least that much.

You may also want to try the approach that sacs distribute the weigth better than a person standing/sitting in one spot. Thus putting less strain on the boat. I am not an engineer but it sounded good in my head, may work on your dad.

I already brought up that point. He is more concerned with the localized stresses the bags would place. It would be like having 5 people standing in the ski locker. Maybe I could convince him to let me do a bunch of smaller bags.

Whats worse is that the max loading is only 1300 Lbs. Figure with 4 people thats almost 700#, another hundred pounds worth of pylon and vests and required equipment onboard. Then add 3 or 4 boards and some other odds and ends (50#). That leaves a mere 450 Lbs left. Is it even worth it at that point?

I understand that there really isnt anything to worry about by exceeding the recommended limit, however its not my boat.

Thanks for the reply.

Tell him you really want to start doing drugs, and the only thing that can stop you is adding 1,000 lbs of weight to the boat.

Yup, try this. A 600 lb fat sack, with the weight equally distributed over it's footprint of say, 4 square feet, equals around 150lbs per square foot.

Now, a 200 lb guy standing on the deck puts 100lbs on EACH FOOT, which is far, far less than 1 square foot. So a standing man puts more pounds per square inch on the deck than a 600 lb fat sack. Add in that fibreglass and composits are far stronger than they need to be, and show him some pictures of people with LOTS of weight in their boats to show that they don't do any harm.

Although, in all fairness, I think he might have a point about the ability of SOME I/O engines to handle a lot of weight around the low end rpm range, but.......

This is coming from a 41 year old dad and boat dealer. Unless you are wallowing the boat and straining against the weight, you will not harm your boat. Be sure to have a sack for the bow and the stern so you can properly balance the boat. As for swamping and sinking - water ballast is neutral and will have no effect other than the weight of the unfilled bag. If you have questions, rider@boarditup.com.

GuitsBoy How did you build a pylon for your boat? Im looking to build one for my boat too but not sure where to start from? Did you build a tower or just the pylon itself?
