Well.....I have been skiing for awhile and find it somewhat booring now. I have a Bayliner Capri 02. The first time i went out with my wakeboard (i didnt even know what it was called) I got up on it, although i think i did it wrong and the hard way. I put the tip ( my leading foot) aimed at the boat and the V in the rope over the tip of the board and muscled my way up.....only to find the board going side to side uncontrollably, if i stood up. Which resulted in the dreaded "face plant" and head ache
THEN i went to back to skiing, jumped a wake and fractured my nose with a nice cut to the bone that bled for about a day. SO.....yes i havent gotten back out but i am going this saturday and need some advice.
How do you PROPERLY get up? Should your toes point toward the boat angled up ? and not the shore line like i did ?
Why did the board swing from side to side when i got up ?
AND FYI I have a BLADE ( i think its called) with the velcrow bindings sounds like from looking on here thats a chitty one...

usually people start by facing the bottom of the board toward the boat so that you are holding the rope and the rope is laying between your toes (because you are laying on your back and facing the sky). you can let the board float up to the water's surface, but bend your body a bit so that your hands are pretty much between your knees. your body should be sooorta similar to if you were going to be picking up a heavy object off the ground. is that confusing enough?
it would take a big long little explanation of why it was squrrly on ya, but it wont happen if you start off in the way that i described above. if you can understand what i am trying to say above haha
and you shouldnt have to muscle through getting up. its mostly about form, and after you get up a few times it should become easier. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

I get what your saying on how to get up ....I'll have to try it. With the board not being that "thick" across there it just looked like it would pull me over that way. Though now it seems like that would be way easier. b/c to get up the way i was you had to position yourself perfect and have great balance.
The board wasnt squrrrly on me when i continued to set down. BUT when i stood up it was. Ive been reading on here and it says 70% of your weight on your back foot and i wasnt doing that ALSO i had my binding shoes turned (there adjustable) 2 clicks on both which made me get pulled kinda at an angle.
Should i straighten them up so there 90deg on the board ? And could the me rinding 50 50 weight on the board do the moving around ? ???
Thanks man lots of help.......... maby i wont injure myself this time again |

try putting your back foot at a 90 degree angle and point your front toe a bit towards the boat. this is done to help beginners open their hips to the boat and get used to the feeling of going sideways. its not a natural motion so thats why i said keep the back foot straight. as you progress you might find yourself changing with the binding angles- this is all personal preference. ideally you want to get to the point where they are both angled (ducked) out so that you can start riding switch/fakie.
i think that the 30/70 weight distribution is more to keep the nose out of the water than anything. of course, putting more weight on the back foot means the back of the board is in the water deeper and can cut through the water more effectively. hence the reason why fins are at the front and back of boards...
is this squirlliness caused only when you were trying to get up or when you are actually up and riding? you are confusing me a bit, not that its real hard after ive been workin all day. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

Yes i was already up and going.....i kept setting down for like 20 seconds or so till we got up to speed then i stood up and it was moving back and forth............
Although, today when i got up i learned how to move the bindings to make it easier....the way they were angled seemed to make me pull to the left side outside the wake so i angled my lead foot (left one) toward the boat more as stated above. This seemed to keep me more in controll. The board is VERY hard to do anything with but i dont fall now. I can move back and forth in the wak but havent tried going over it but once. Its TOTALY different than skiing. It seems all you have to do is sorta push down on your toes to move to the right (toe side) or lean back on your heels to go left. But still its sorta squrrley but i am getting it under controll now. THE BINDINGS DO SUCK THOUGH.
Any advice on bettering my skills etc would help. Bindings are set lead foot left one click toward the boat and rear at 90deg, and yes now i get up the RIGHT way its so much easier ....and wakeboarding doesnt tire you like skiing does |

You might be boarding with your goofy foot forward.
I'm a newbie too, but after trying to board one way I switched feet and it went much better. I can get up both ways, but goofy foot forward feels really odd and the board is squirrely like you describe.
Just a thought.
Have fun with it, but be warned, it's addicting as hell.

yes thats right i have my left foot forward. BUT I'm right handed and my right foot is dominant as well. BUT!!!! I golf, and batt left handed ???? So i guess naturally i just went left foot forward for some reason. I might try going the other way although it just seems more natural the other way for some reason. Maby it will be smoother right foot forward if i can learn that. Were going for a week starting july 11th to lake palastine in tyler so i will get some good p ractice time there.
Any more helpful hints ?????? |

I think it's reduced $50 to $200. Right or left handed has nothing to do with right foot forward (goofy-footed) or left (regular). The board won't hurt your learning capabilities for just getting up and riding around, which is sounds like you may be doing for a while if you've never snowboarded or skateboarded or anything, but much beyond that you may want something a bit better. Spend the $500 and get a Team/Sphynx package when you're ready to get a new board. Those bindings are like pillows and the board will progress with you for quite a while. Also, you should seriously consider buying one of the instructional videos out. There are several and should be pretty helpful. _________________ PS- this is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

You can find vids all over the net... I have heard of many people buying the book from overtons.com... I believe that this will help you, but I like to watch pro vids just to see what they are landing as well... However, I went to a wakeboard camp about 7 years ago to learn how to ride so that was basically my video... Ever since I have just sort of done what feels natural and like I said above, watch the pro vids. For boards, I would reccomend a package deal to start with, just because it will get you out there, they are cheap, and you can upgrade next season. I started on a CWB slayer and ride an Absolute now which has some wicked pop to it. _________________

well, it's good to see the sport is growing in texas. when i started a few years ago, there were only a few people on each lake that even knew what we were doing, and even fewer were doing it too. now i can't even drive past a lake without seeing a couple of nautiques and mastercrafts out there with guys ripping behind them. as far as the videos go, "detention" and "the book" are both great and can be found all over the internet. the best way to learn though, is a wakeboard camp and just getting out to ride. _________________ "Hey man, I like that roll cage on your boat." |
