Hey, I am going to be putting in a new stereo with 4 speakers and some kind of sub. The question is which brand/setup should i get! I really would like to keep this under about 300 so I might have to order from ebay or something. Could you please post what brand you would suggest that I purchase, and what setup would be good, thanks!!

Hey jdjgreenhair,

I think your target number is a bit low....you can get a Clarion head with rca outs and an aux. in (for iPod direct connect) for about $150 on eBay. You can get Pioneer 6.5's for about $50 a pair, you can get an amp for $100, you can get a powered sub for $100. Bear in mind - this is a low-end system. You'll need a bunch of wire and connectors as well...

thank you, any one else have opinions with pictures or anything? I found a PYLE system with the receiver, speakers, 1000 watt amp and a powered sub for around 300.

Pyle is shiat. Get a lower end Pioneer cd player, walmart whatever-100 bucks
6.5 inch Speakers arent that'd big thats what I have in my boat. If I were you I'd get

4- 6x9 inch speakers find some pioneer or whatever brand you like I use pioneer)-100 bucks, could find em cheaper on ebay proboly.

For a subwoofer I'd get a bazooka amplified bass tube(amp built in) These you can find on ebay for under 100 just gott keep watching.

Of course you will need power wires, speaker wires, ect. Which will be about 50 for basic stuff.

Will this system win competitions? No way
Will it sound good? Of course

I got a Panasonic deck for $150 with 3 RCA 5 volt pre-outs ... (Crutchfield)
4 Pioneer 4 way speakers $35 a pair (ebay) .... 75 watt RMS
12 inch Premier sub in box $75 (ebay) ... 300 watts
MTX 4 channel amp $125 (ebay)
MTX sub amp $75 (ebay)

Do some research and you can find a lot of great deals on older stuff on ebay.

eBay is your friend.

Here's my setup. It's just a little over your budget.

Sony CD with 3 pre-amp outs $150
4 Pioneer 6.5"s - $80
Alpine MRV-F400 amp - $90
Polk 10" Sub - $25 (from a friend)
Built my own box - $26 for MDF, glue, etc.
And wires were about $30.

I'm not winning any competitions, but it sounds great.

Personally I've found that 6.5's are WAY better than 6x9's. Ebay is great, but your local circuit city/good guys/etc. can also have some killer deals in their open box dept. Plus they usually have a 30-day money back program if they don't work out. If it were me, I'd get a decent $100-$200 head unit, spend $150 or so for 2 pairs of decent speakers and then add a sub and amp in another month or 2 once you've got some more cash. You'll be alot happier with a system like that than one that you spent $300 for the whole thing.

I am looking at a couple of head units on ebay, this is what I "think" I need - aux input (ipod), 20 watt RMS, Sub Pre - amp output, plays mp3/CD-RW. How important is the pre-amp voltage? I am going to be pushing 2 - 6.5" sony explodes, 2 - 5.25" sony explodes, and one self amplified 6.5" or 8" bazooka tube. Nothing too crazy as I will probably be unloading the I/O to look for a DD after this season. I don't have much stereo knowledge so any help is great.

Oh yeah, I am going to try and re-wire every thing too, what am I looking for in quality for wiring and where is the best place, circuit city, lowes...?

The main things I like to have on a head unit are:

At least 2 preouts- 1 for sub, 1 for an amp if I decide to add one later
Subwoofer control on HU

After that there's lots of nice features you can get for more $$$. More preamp voltage means a cleaner signal going to your amp. Based on what your other componants are, I don't think you need to worry about it.

Xplodes are kinda crappy IMO. I know lots of people run em as do alot of my friends but I've found that they're not very durable and/or cheaply made. Every one of my friends with xplod stuff has had issues with it. You could run some 6.5 pioneers, kenwoods, etc for about the same price.
