SO i took my car in to have a "system" installed this morning. I already had a sub and an amp, so all I needed them to do was wire the car, and build me a box. Turns out the amp i had won't fit under the seat, so i decide to just buy a new amp. I leave the car and go about my business. Later they call and say the sub I gave them was bad (something about the voice coil) So i buy a new sub. They call again and say, well you need some adapter peice, it's $50. WTF!!

My $150 install job turned into a $500 install real quick. Just a little upset.

Always do car audio yourself. The work is easy and there are hundreds of sites to show you how to do it. You dont think these shops stay in business charging $150 for a couple of hours work do you.? The car customization industry is second only to real estate for its scams....

Nowadays stock systems are pretty damn good. I rock the Ace of Base hard on my Kraco 5000.

I have done systems myself, this was more of a I want to spend my Saturday on the lake, not in my garage.

My stock system wasn't very good. I did keep the stock stereo though since it is a 6 disc in dash changer.

If the voice coil was bad in the sub you had, couldn't you get a new one under warranty?

I try to avoid installers myself because I have heard a few of these stories. I always buy my stuff online(cheaper) and install it myself. If you can strip and crimp wires and run a cordless drill its easy.

Like i said, i have done other cars on my own, this one would have been the most difficult yet. It is a 2002 Explorer with the 3rd seat, i needed a custom box to fit behind the 3rd row seat, also, i wanted to keep the factory stereo so i had to get a little RCA converter box to hook into some speaker wires. All the speakers are in doors so the wires were harder to get to. It would have taken me all day or most likely all weekend to do it myself. I'd rather be drinking beer with bikini babes on the moomba.

That's a good point about the SUB, it is a Rockford Fosgate so i will try to get it warrantied.

Pulling door panels can be quite intimidating for the amateur installer, especially on newer vehicles. For this reason alone I would hope most people think long and hard about DIY.

Best advice: find a reputable shop.

Couple hours of work? To build the box maybe, if it was a hard place to put it.

I intall systems here for $20(just for fun) usually, and am building a custom box setup for my friend's civic(ricer Rolling Eyes ).

Come over here, I'll install your system and build you a box. Very Happy

i just sent my truck in today to have my install done. i wish i was getting away with 150 for the install. But throw in a custom box and amp rack, dynamat, head unit, capacitor, and install and im spending over 1500. That is not including the speakers, amps, and sub i purchased already thats another 3 grand right there.
