H- I have not owed a force outboard but just from what I have heard from others on this site, I would stay away. I bet someone on this site could tell you the years that Chrysler made Force and the years Merc made them. If I was buying an O/B I would go with Yamaha #1 and then an actual Merc #2.

If it has the force l-drive absolutely positively without any doubt whatsoever stay the h-e-l-l away from that boat! IF it has a force outboard I would still encourage you to stay away!

My first boat was 1990 bayliner with the force l-drive and it was nightmare from the day I got it till the day I got rid of it. dont get me wrong i HAD plenty of fun with it when it was working, but it was in the shop or I was working on it more then it was running!

Stay away from FORCE! You will be hard pressed to get positive feedback on this, and it might be even harder to find someone willing to work on it!

I have heard all the same bad stories about the Force outboards. My personal experience was a very good one with Force. I had an 1987 Bayliner with an 85 Hp Force outboard and it ran great. The only problem we ever had was it didn't start as fast as an Evinrude. The main thing, if you do consider a Force or any other outboard is to make sure that you are buying a boat and motor that has been taken care of.

The other area of discussion that you will get into if you are looking for an outboard is whether to use the oil injection system or premix fuel. Most people will agree that new oil injection systems are very reliable but the best method to ensure proper lubrication in an older outboard is to unhook the injeciton system and premix 50-1.

Ya those force motors are piles of sh*t. A guy I know has one and we took his boat out and it had a hard time pulling out two skiiers on combo skiiers, and the same people were pulled out easily by a 125 horse mercury(same hp as the force) and the mercury was like old old.

In the early 90's we towed in LOTS of boats with Force outboards. Don't know when/if they improved, but I sure wouldn't risk it.
