I no this doesnt have to do much with boats but here goes. I no their are guys on this site who are stereo buffs. I currently have a MTX 200/2 amp in my car and i am picking up a ton of alternator noise. I have a filter for the alternator and it made some difference but i can sill hear it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a filter that conects in line with the RCA cables. Then all you do is plug the other end in and it worked for my noise. I don't know if you have the same thing but i think you may be able to pick this thing up at circuit city, a local stero shop, and possibly even wal mart.

What you need is a ground loop isolater, one can be purchased at any stereo shop. You may also want to find a better ground for your setup.

How exactly do you develop a ground loop or what's the best way to
avoid them without and isolator?

Yea i agree you need a better ground and also look for where you may have the polarity reversed on a speaker or two...

This link has a ground loop isolater on it: http://stingerelectronics.com/sting_products/electronics.asp if you want to know about how they work, just do a search on any search engine. It brings up alot of different pages with info.

make sure you have good quality wires and have the negative cable from the amp short as possible to the ground.
also keep the wires and rca away from the power cables.

The ground cable should be shorter than 18" in length and you should sand all the paint off the body where you bolt the ground to it. It should be wire to metal contact with nothing in between.

Alternator noise can also be picked up if your speaker wires are running next to or with your power wires. You need to make sure they are completely seperate from each other (you will probably notice that your amp has power connections on one side and speaker connections on the other....there is a good reason for that!) If the wires do have to cross, they should cross at a 90 degree angle and minimize the amount of times this happens.

I had a case where I was getting alternator noise and it turned out that something inside the amp was loose. When I wiggled the wire it sounded good, when I left it alone it sounded like crap.

A ground-loop isolator is good for troubleshooting and for fixing minor problems, but in the end it is just a band-aid. You really should track down the cause of the problem without having to use a ground-loop isolator.

Good luck!
