I'm trying to get a hold of him to get some speaker cans, but I've emailed him twice over the last several weeks with no response. I'm using this address:

camacho6592000@yahoo.com

Is this correct? (this is what I found by doing a search)

Thanks-
Sam

I was told he is no longer working with the company selling the equipment. Contact Paula at paula@precisionmetalmachining.com and she can help you out.

Are the cans/clamps still for sale by someone? Those were excellent quality stuff and very resonable pricewise.

Thanks Lee!

Now, I want to get a pair of these cans and put something like the Kicker K6.2 speakers in them. (I was told this was a nice speaker setup). I know nothing about speakers. Since these are a "component speaker", will the 1" tweeter fit within the grill of this speaker, or does the tweeter have to be mounted somewhere else? Do I mount the crossover inside the can somehow? Here is an example of the speakers.....

You can mount the tweeters in the grills, i have done it in the past in Car audio. Just make sure you mount them VERY WELL, your boat will transmit a lot more vibration than a car would. Also, use expanding foam insulation (from Home depot or Lowes) for the x-over. Spray some in the can and then place the x-over in the insulation as it sets up. AFter it has cured spray some dynamat or equivilant and then put some polyfil aftert he dynamat has cured. I put MBQ's in 4 of Rauls ALuminum cans this way and they sound great. BTW, you can get the post type connectors at Radio Shack and they fit perfect.

The Kicker speakers might leave an exposed edge of the can showing.

Thanks guys. Great info. I did some further searching on the forum here and found that some folks have mounted Kicker K65.2 (6.5") with a little of the can remaining exposed. I can get the K6.2 a little cheaper (6"), but I am concerned that it may be too small in diameter to fit Raul's cans. Anyone happen to know if the K6.2's will work?

He also has 6x9 cans. I have a few pics in a old thread if you do a search.

ATROPINE,
I posted a review of several speakers that would and would not fit in his cans on a thread in the forums. It was a long time ago but you should be able to find it. It has pics etc.

A major problem is with "6-1/2" speakers. The required hole cutout for the speakers and the bolt hole diameter & pattern for mounting are all over the map from one speaker company to the next. A place a little standardization would go a long way.

MonsterTower,
I totally agree. Problem is however, that would mean European, Japanese and American manufacturers would have to work together. Shocked There are diffs with the American manufacturers too though. One I find interesting is that MBQuarts for North America are now manufactured in the states yet they haven't standardized bolt patterns OR even openings. Confused

BIZ,
The Kicker K6.2 comes with all the hardware to mount the tweeters under the grill.
I had these in my last boat and liked them so much that I ordered 3 pair for the new boat. thewholesalematrix.com has them for $90 a pair.

Jansen, i was speaking generically on the tweets in the grills. Don't know much about the kickers... and was just going off the info given.

Guys you can get Skylons deafcon 1's with similar cans and the same kicker speakers for $335 a pair shipped at wakeside.com. It doesn't even make sense to DIY on these.

Cans are 130 shipped
clamps 76 shipped
speakers around 100 shipped
That's $306 right there and you haven't bought connectors, wiring, hardware etc. or spent time putting them together.

Raul's cans appear to come with clamps for the $60 price as long as you don't need clamps greater than 2". So $130 for cans/clamps (delivered), K65.2's for $114 delivered = $244 delivered, plus speaker connectors/wires/etc. Right?

Do they? I really coundn't tell by the ebay ad if they did come with clamps. Has anyone purchased them lately and can verify? I am thinking of ordering 2 pairs..

I'm pretty sure you have to buy the clamps seperately but somebody should call and find out.

The other thing you should take into account on this stuff is lead time and warranty issues. It doesn't even seem like anyone can get ahold of Raul......wakeside stands behind everything they sell and has great customer service, that alone is probably worth the small price difference.

keithroo, I think wakeside does a great job, no doubt.

but this isn't a small price difference. skylon want $810 for a set of defon 2's (most do however charge 730)

you can have 4 sets of Rauls cans (8 speakers) with clamps and speakers for $730 with some money left over for speaker wire! even more if you look at the 810 MSRP

i can't think the defcons are that much better... its the same speaker and similar enclosure. and personally, i prefer rauls clamps, they look neater in my opinion.

OK, sorry to rant on but i jsut can't understand skylon pricing... defcon 2's for example. you have like 129 bucks of speaker, a few bucks of wiring.... and then the enclosure and clamps seems to come to almost 600 bucks... to me that seems absolutly insane!

Anyone else agree? or is this just the way it works?

Brit, What does it matter what the msrp of deafcon 2's are??? The only price that matters is what you can get online and buy them for. Also the speakers that people are building with these cans are not similar to Deafcon 2's, they are similar to Deafcon 1's which can be bought for $335 right now. The point I was making is that right now it's hardly worth DIY. If there wasn't any clearance pricing it would be worth considering DIY.

To your second point, yes companys have to sell their products for more than they make them for.

keithroo,
Yes they are similar to Def 1's depending on what speaks you put in the bare cans. I assembled my own with Rauls cans and clamps about a year and a half ago and saved a bundle. The $335 is for a pair. I paid like $545 total so I saved $125 off the new clearance price, plus the speaks I have are MBQ's with x-overs. I could have bought Kickers and dealt with the exposed edge but I bought the polished AL ones so I didn't want it to look tacky. The painted cans look fine with the uncovered edge if they are touched up.

Here's the thread of my build. At the time you could not buy what I have anywhere near the price I paid to DIY. A similar set up from wakeside.com was around $900.

See this post for speaks on pg 3 that fit into Rauls cans.

I received my cans from Precision Metal Machining (Raul's cans) yesterday. They DID come with clamps for the e-bay auction price of $60 per can.
