There was a good thread on this before the site crashed...
Anyways, I think I'm ready to try one. I want to ask though if it's best to go with the regular rope or short rope? On corners or on straights?
Where I ride everyone that raleys uses the short rope on mostly corners. I'm just thinking that on the off-chance I do it right the first time, the short rope will give me way too much air that I'll probably panic and let go of the rope in mid air. Which I did my first time on the kicker.
Any other cable trick tips would be great.

alright i left a pretty good and detailed explanation on the old board so i'll do it again.
first off you don't have to do it on the turns in fact i used to learn all my tricks on the straight aways. however either way there's some things to remember. i'll go ahead and explain as if you were going to try it on the turn.
wait for the carrier to go around the corner before you start your cut.
go ahead and take a couple of hard cuts like you were going to throw the trick just to get a feeling for the pull of the cable.
when you feel like your ready here's what you do. make a hard and progressive cut (progressive is the key). when at the hardest point of your cut throw the board OUT and AWAY from your body. by throwing it both out and away from your body all the tension in the line snaps you out of the water. make sure you throw it while on your edge. other wise you lose all of the line tension. this is the hardest thing to do. if you can already do a backroll or ralley behind the boat you should have no problem. same thing on the backroll cut out and away while your on edge. hope this helps.

Derrick, when you say throw the board out, does this mean to actively push it forward with my heels towards the direction of the pull to initiate it? As opposed to just leaning back away from the cable and waiting for something to happen?
Is trying on the straights considerably harder? (There are always newbies sprawled all over the corners that I would have to avoid; straights are cleaner). And am I right in avoiding the indian line while learning?
Thanks!

I still don't get this. I've tried throwing my legs behind me but I just end up digging my toes in & faceplanting - nice.
I found this description on the net yesterday - http://www.wakeboard.com.sg/tips/cb-raley.htm - that says - just keep loading the line & it'll happen on it's own.
Not sure about that either.
Pete

pedro.. you should dig in your heels just about when the carrier goes around the turn so the toeside of the board won't dig in the water and you faceplant. lean back kinda like let your back fall.. and the cable will pretty much do the rest
derrick... how do you do the backroll on the cable?

Derrick. You say once your progressive cut is at it's hardest, throw your board out...?
I've been trying this for a while on the corners but find it hard to get the board behind me to throw it out. Do you push it out (along the edge) away from the cable, or literally come up over it?
I ride regular and will definitely be trying to nail a raley from the dock (it certainly seems easier to try there) as soon as my lake opens.
Cool profile pic by the way - dock start?

alright i'd like to clear up a miscomception about the cable. by just simply cutting on the corners you won't magically be lifted into the air. (unless your on a really short indian line).
as far as throwing the board out and away think about it being a continuation of your cut. this is the hardest thing for me to explain without being there to just show you what i mean. take your cut, when you fell like your at your hardest cut think about keeping your upperbody somewhat stationary and have your lower body "slip" (and i use the term slip loosly) out and away from your body. this should be a pretty quick motion. while your on edge think about throwing it at about a 30-45 degree angle away from the direction your cutting. i'm not sure if this makes sense but if your at the cable trying them ask the operator to watch you and tell you what your doing wrong. any operator should be able to tell you some pointers.
stuwart, thanks for the compliment and yeah thats a dock start. if your regular footed right off of the dock is one of the best places. youll feel the "whip" effect like on a turn.
as far as doing them on the straight aways same principales apply. when you release off of your cut you should be approximatly 5-10 ft outside of the cable. the corners are easier to load the line than the straight aways but you should be fine if your cut is strong enough. they way i learned was on the straight aways. i put the biggest fin i could on the back of the board. it was like a 2.5 or 3 from and old skurfer style board. try it, it really made me feel like i was loading the line better.
backrolls are pretty much the same concept. instead of keeping your head in the forward looking postion look up and over your lead shoulder.
last word of advice. don't think about it. just day f- it and go for it.

i got a couple, guess I got lucky....it only took one try. I think it helps to do it behind a boat. This was my second day of cable riding.

I learned them off the starting dock at TSR like Derrick mentioned. Much more fundamental skill than behind the boat. Ive only been once, and I didnt find it to difficult.
