I have a hard time getting my board around on a surface 180. I currently ride a Blindside McKee 141 with the 1.5inch center fins and molded fins. Any tips? I think I just expect my board to swing around (like a snowboard) and it seems to have some grip in the water. I'm also petrified of face planting. I can get around fakie but then I'm nervous to go back regular.

Cool

remove those big center fins and you will be good to go.
Sounds like you need to ride switch a bit to get more comfortable.

I removed the center fin and didn't like how lose the board was. I might still have to try it again the get use to it .... I also have some old fins that are a different shape (shorter) then the center fins currently.

Leave the fins. If you turn enough it will turn right around. This is because the front fin cathces. You should try this out it will feel like you have no fins...

You don't need to take the fins out. I learned how to do surface 180s on a board with 2.5 in fins you just have to try. The board will go but if you are hesitant because you think you will face plant you probably will because you will take it out to slow and get it caught. Go fast!!!

Ladythump, Slow the boat down to about 14mph to first learn. Shift most of your weight to your front foot and twist your hips so your back foot breaks free from the water. Lean slightly on your heels as the board comes around so you don't faceplant, leaving most of your weight on what was your front foot. The front fins will catch and straighten your board back up. Try to spin the board slow and controlled. Hope that helps, feel free to email me with any questions.
