my family is looking at a new boat with a 4 stroke 75 (its a boston whaler 16') and anouther boat with an 88 (17' boston whaler), the 17' is a lttle cheaper but does the 4 stroke realy make that much of a difference in power or would the 88 be the best option

4 stroke runs cleaner and has better fuel efficiency. Not sure about power though...

2 stroke usually has more power.

Jeff, Just an FYI if you have a 2 stroke (of coarse with the grandfather law) will be soon outlawed on the lakes everywhere. I would go with 4 stroke, sounds like you fish and now sense in killing anymore fish. I think there are enough jet skis doing it. But that is my opinion!!

The 4 stroke isnt as fast for acceleration. But is better for the environment.

I think you might want to add that for the same displacement 2 strokes usually have more power, a small 2 stroke won't have more power than a large 4 stroke. On an environmental note, I didn't think it was big deal until I rode on a friends PWC. I couldn't believe how big the oil reserve tank was and how fast it emptied. Personnally, I wouldn't get a 2 stroke.

My dad has a two stroke his fishing boat. It is terrible. It smells and dosn't run all that well. It is a late model motor too!!!! He is selling the boat because of this. I would not suggest getting one.

2 stroke:
small and lightweight
better power to wieght ratio
idle bad run rougher
smelly
got to mix oil
bad for enviroment
poor fuel economy
cheaper

4 stroke:
big and bulky
run and idle smoothly
runs clean
better fuel economy
got to check oil
more expensive

Why do you think an inboard wont be able to handle the water? I have seen like 75 starcraft with 160hp i/o on georgian bay all the time . Just get one with a V hull and youl be fine. Better wake too and more room

I have to keep my boat on a moring for most of the summer, it ends up getting pounded once and a while, just with whalers theres like 4 parts in the whole boat that can break cuz theres not a whole lot in them, i/b have a lot more stuff that can get damaged like vinal, drive shaft, and theres more electtronics, until i can trailer the boat every day i dont realy wanan risk have an i/b out in open water for a coupel days
