after experiencing the worst boardstock 3 years ago in stockton, i vowed never to go back. there were fights, rapes, underaged drinking, etc., etc.

"maybe it'll get better" i thought.

wrong. from what i've heard and read, it just got worse each time!

now, "boardstock" is basically wakesurfstock. now, wakesurfing is fine and all if that's what you like. but please, don't attach the "boardstock" name to an event that is nothing like the original.

did you know that clubs or sites can't have a "boardstock gathering" unless they get permission to use "boardstock" from the corporate heads that promote and organize the event? apparently, "boardstock" is no longer a household name. it has an owner. so, if i were to start a thread and call it, "wakeworld's boardstock gathering," i'd get sued or be asked to pay a fee for using the name "boardstock" in the sum of $5000 or so!

does this sound like the event that took place in the middle of lake shasta? not even close.

my solution? take the name back, and bring back the original. websites need to join together and "take back" the original name from those who know nothing about boardstock and give it back to its rightful owner...the riders! people need to come together, take the name back, and put together an event that people will be stoked about, will be happy to attend, and be talked about months after it's over.

the people that can do it are people we all know and respect. pat mccarthy (wakeboarder.com), dave williams(wakeworld.com), chris ramey (wakepics.com), jason buffalow (westsideconnection.net), nick knieriem (newt juice). these people know what it takes to bring an event together...they need to do it! there are others i know that can help in making "a real boardstock" a reality. you all should step up. i know i'll be lending out a hand.

it needs to be in the middle of the lake, where there are no mx ramps (no, i'm not against fmx at all), there are no stages for bands and/or djs, there are no easy access for underage drinkers/pot smokers.

what do you guys think?

I agree. I was at the first 2 Boardstocks (96 & 97). Those were so much fun. I was on the East coast for the next couple, then didn't want to go after they changed the setup. I read that Shasta banned Boardstock due to all the police fines they gave out (all party related). The first two were relatively small (still plenty of partying), so no authorities got too upset. Trying to take it back to Shasta today would still turn into a huge houseboat party and lots of pissed off Shasta authorities.

Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I doubt the same quality of the original Boardstocks could ever be duplicated, at least with the caliber riders that were there (Byerly, Parks, Gator, Shapiro). If there is a way to do it, I'm there!

Man, I have yet to make it to a Boardstock, so I am not on board 100% w/ you, but as one of the organizers of Mid West Wake Fest, I know 90% of what you mean. When we took over the MWWF name we told Tony N. we would keep the tradition alive w/ what he started and keep it focused on the riders! Check out the site (www.midwestwakefest.com) to see what I am talking about. And maybe you folks outside the Midwest will come join us next year!!

Wont go to boardstock because i heard its a nightmare now.

They are going to have motocross, bands, etc...

More like a concert and not a wakeboarding event. Too bad, i heard it used to be a killer time.

They are calling it a wakeboarders lifestyle event... it should not be called boardstock any more. They should just call it X-fest or something like that and we should definitely take back the name. Or to hell with the name, we could call ours wakestock or something else that is not f$$king "owned", and I am sure that we could find somewhere that would not mind too much the crowd and would be happy to profit from all the people that it would draw. There are so many lakes in Nor-Cal, it would not be a problem, hell we could have it at the Delta!!! ssshhiiittt count me in! Cool

Wazzy,
The Tony N. you refer to, is he from Cincinnati? If he is the same one I know the guy is cool as hell, I was out there last year for training and we went out and rode.

I went to the second and third boardstock at Shasta and it was awesome. I think just being a long ways from a big city is a bonus and access by boat really limits it to people who are true to the core of the sport.

Salute to the true boardstock . . . .

Wazzy,
Yeah that is him. If you ever get the chance, go ride with him. He is hella cool. And I have rode behind a lot of boats from zodiacs to the latest and greatest X-star and his boat is the only boat that (in my opinion) has a better wake than mine. It is just awesome.

I went to boardstock in stockton 2 years ago. It was okay, i just watched the wakeboarders and then bolted to get out of there. total sausage fest, like a 7-1 ratio. I'll be there on sunday to watch some wakesurfers and wakeboarders then like last time, i'm gonna bolt. Laughing I do agree they need to change the name though. And as far as the old ones being better than now, i'm sure thats very true.

These events will only be good as long as they are underground and no one tries to make a buck from them.

Lyle...sweet, I will keep that in mind. Although I haven't heard from him in a while... have u?

First, if somebody is trying to make a buck off an event, they are in it for the wrong reasons!!! And that is why sports such as wakeboarding will loose it's soul. To many money hungry people looking for the quick buck and out instead of trying to build the sport up. Second, it is very hard to make any money while putting on events. Maybe one as big as "new" Boardstock will make some money, but I can't say since I have never been there.

Wazzy,
I here you on the event thing. I think it is really difficult to make money off of something like that.

I haven't heard from him in about a year. I will have to check to see if I still have his email address
