I was told this that made a diference:
Don't go too far outside the wake, maybe 10 feet.
You want a lot of air but not necessarily loads of distance so you don't need tons of speed.
Make sure you don't start the rotation too early wait until you are at the top of the wake getting the pop. If you start the rotation to early you'll get no height and land on your arse!
The wake should kick you up straight into your roll, it should be all one fluid motion, you don't have to huck it.
Make sure you keep both hands on the handle and keep the handle in at your hips. The handle is like your throttle, let it out a bit your rotation will slow down, keep it in tight your rotation will be quick, let go of the handle all together and you will guaranteed land on your head!
They don't hurt that much to learn even when you do land on your head. They hurt most when you bottle it in the last minute! Commit to it and don't back out!
Good luck!
P.S. There are a lot of threads on backrolls. If you search using the search button at the top you may find a load more advice too. |

Like midwest said, look up and over your lead shoulder but (IMO) looking with your head is not as important on a backroll as on a tantrum.
Your rotation should happen weather you move your head or not! |

| take your hardest cut when you are at the wake. once you can do that consistently you will be able to land the roll consistently |

| what you wanna do to initiate your rotation is lean against the rope and load your back foot with most of your weight right before you hit the wake. then push your board infront of you and look off your lead shoulder and hang on. the rotation is based on how you load yourself before you hit the wake then your rope controls you in the air. also dont close your eyes, alot of begginers do and that either causes them to under or over rotate because they dont know where they are. also have you tried a tantrum? to some they are easier because they are just a straight back flip, the only hard part is the trip which is kinda hard at first. hope this helps |

| you want the rotation to start with your board and your head following. so your going to want the board infront of you with your back to the water first. |

| ride all the way up the wake. you dont have to cut out far i find its way easier to have a short cut at the wake. then cut hardest right at the wake and straighten your legs. think about it as up and away (shaun taught me this from detention haha) look over your lead shoulder and keep your hands close to your hips and spot your landing. its crucial not to throw the flip to sson and not get any air. its better to wait for the wake to pop you up and initiate the flip then try to huck it yourself. |

like that one guy said
the cut is the most important thing but u dont have to take that shortcut if you dont want to just make sure your loading the rope, u dont have to be goin fast as long as ur loadin the roap
good luck _________________ i wish i lived in florida...

| you can judge the amount of speed by just taking a few heelside jumps , you want to have enough speed to land in the flats on a regular heelside w2w jump because when you start to look over your lead shoulder you are going to loose a bit of forward momentum when the rotation starts. |

well this is a very helpful thread, I was planning on trying a backroll this weekend, ill keep this thread tagged
My one question would be about the cuts...some people are saying cut really hard, others say dont get that much speed...My theory is hard cuts=a lot of speed? I am already used to doing very aggressive, sometimes out of control (which I try not to do) cuts, so it would help to get this cleared up, thanks! _________________ Liquid Force 2004 Evo 138 - Liquid Force Alpha 2005 |

I've watched detention and higher education, watched all the videos, and have even tried afew backrolls, but im still confused about the path the board is supposed to take.
lets say that you are left foot forward, going heel side. The boat is driving along the x axis at 90 degrees, the opposing shore is 0 degrees.
the takeoff of a normal w2w jump is around 45 degrees (give or take). Higher education says to let the board go "behind you". So does the flight path of the board go closer to zero degrees, or do you still take off at 45, and follow that around?
does this make any sence? |

| hard cut does not always equal more speed, but the harder the cut the more load you put on the line. The more tention you have on the line when you initiate a backroll, the faster you will spin. |

oh and one more question, the trick tips page says to "look over your front shoulder to initiate the rotation." How does that work? Wouldn't looking over your front shoulder start a forward rotation? _________________ Liquid Force 2004 Evo 138 - Liquid Force Alpha 2005 |

| dizzyj, that is a very good question. i would say the board goes into negative degress.even farther then 0. you cut hardest at the wake and the board will go out behind you. i like how you used the degrees to ask a question, it makes it was easier to answer. |

| Zito, i didnt see your question at first so i will answer it now. no it means your head should be looking in the direction of your shoulder. when it says look over your shoulders it means looking towards your left or right shoulder(depending on your stance) as you are flipping. its almost like looking up when you go off the wake. if you were to look down then that would probably initiate a forward rotation. the looking up and away into the sky will help with the flip. |

hyperrider, thank you for clearing that up. I was trying to imagine the whole thing, and when it came to beginning to rotate, I actually did look forward but somewhat up towards the sky. _________________ Liquid Force 2004 Evo 138 - Liquid Force Alpha 2005 |

thanks man, glad someone could understand my way of thinking. Its a peeve of mine to describe complex motions in terms that dont really explain things (dont get me started about "lefty loosy, righty tighty".
one more question. do you cut to the negative, or do you do a normal 45 degree w2w cut, and the motion of the backroll throws the board into the negative? Im going to guess the latter, since most descriptions say "take your progressive edge". |
