My dad went out and bought a new ski rope. I was wondering if there is any way to tell if it is a stretch or non-stretch line.

Mike, sorry but my spectra line does crush up, the only line that wouldnt would be Jacket line...

tie it on to something solid and then lean back holding on to it and see if it stretches, also as i said in your post in the newbie forums spectra line will usually be thin...

You will also be able to tell by how much he paid for it. A good mainline will run you around a $100.

Jacket series is the only way to go... More expensive, but well worth it.

as wkebrd3 will attest to, we go riding 3 to 4 times a week and I've had that line for 2 seasons now, and it's still going strong.

Yes, the Jacket series is the best rope (I've seen).

It never tangles and is still in "like new" condition.

Jacket series lines are awesome, just the blue one is hard to see.

Does your rope have a brand name on it or anything?

will you guys please use the word "know" instead of "no" if that's what you mean. It makes it a whole lot easier to read your post.

Thanks.

Pinch the rope about an inch apart. Push the rope together, scrunching it and let go. Release the rope. If it maintains the shape you put it in, its spectra. If it goes back into its regualr state, its poly-e. Hope that helps.

I liked the yellow jacket, that rope looked cool. My friend has one still. Is there anywhere where you can get older ropes, like the yellow jacket?

If it has a label Spectra is non stretch, Kevlar & poly-e are low stretch, & poly-p is a waterski line, lots of stretch. Just go buy a cheap Spectra Mainline for 50-60 bucks, it makes a ton of difference if you are jumping. Does anyone kow if Stiffline is making ropes? They had the thinnest mainline ever.

ScottA, how would you know what I experience on the boat? OK, maybe it doesn't EVER tangle, but very rarely (usually when rooks are handling the rope). I have used many ropes, and this is the one I would recommend.

I agree that the Hyperlite Jacket series is the best rope going right now. Anyone who says that it tangles must have tied it in a knot themselves. Don't pay 100 bucks for it though, all of the dealers are discounting right now to get rid of the 04' stuff so look for a good deal and you'll find one.

Bill S., friend has one that tangles just as bad, it doesn't get in knots but it does tangle. I don't think there is going to be a actual non tangle rope for a while.. they all say that but...

I have the Jacket series too, they do tangle. However I have no beefs once the rope gets wet. Its alot easier to manage.

The best way to tell if it stretches is...Do a huge power slide right behind the boat. During the slide let go of the rope quickly. If it slings back, and hits your driver in the head, it stretches. Burn it, and buy a new rope.
