I went out this weekend to try and learn a heelside backside 3.

I am really struggling to get the rotation, I am careful not to start the spin too early and try to pull the handle hard to my back hip.

I found that I was under rotating even though the wake jump is big. I also had some really bad falls and knocked myself about trying it. Crying or Very sad

Any advice please?

Sounds like you are looking for the frontside three if you are pulling to your back hip. Try to use your head to help complete the rotation, put your chin on your lead shoulder and keep looking for that far shoreline. Dont look down or you may drift off axis and fall hard. If your handle pass doesnt feel clean, practice that on land or on a trampoline, get muscle memory and your chances of hitting it on the water will be higher.

Sort of sounds like your not starting the rotation quick enough. You definatly need to wait to start the rotation, but don't wait too long. Basically as long as your off of the wake when you start it you should be ok. Don't throw it like you would on a snowboard either. Just use the handle and head like Jim M said. The trampoline will also help. Keep the handle pass in close to your body.

Check out the "handle pass" thread. A good hip-pull/handle pass is the key to keeping your balance and rotation on point.

Are you making the handle pass at all? Are you starting your pull with both hands? You also need to make sure you pull past your hip. Once you let go with your lead hand, keep pulling with your rear hand until you make the pass, if you don't pull all the way through this trick then:
1.)The handle is too far from the middle of your back, causing you to miss the handle pass.
2.)you under rotate causing really nasty falls.

I orginally learned by:

a) starting off wrapped
b) using a trampoline

once I felt comfortable with 'how' I would be rotating, the feel of it, I was much better prepared for going handle pass.
