Has anybody been wake surfing? I am debating whether or not to get one. I have seen ads in the wakeboarding mag and it looks like all you do is ride and cut. Are spins possible? Grabs? Anything other than cutting? Also, the board I am looking at is the Hyperlite Broadcast. Would that be a good beginner board? Thanks.

Other stuff is possible, like getting a tiny bit of air by just ollieing off the lip, or doing surface 360s and 180s. Really though, there isn't a huge variety of tricks available. For most people it's more fun just to be naturally propelled by the wave and carve around.

wakesurfing is great! Its a ton of fun, but you need a couple of things.

1. a great driver
2. right length rope
3. weight
4. right board for your wake.

When you have these things wakesurfing rivals wakeboarding as far as fun goes in my opinion.

I just use a 'real' 6'3 surfboard and shorten my line to about 12ft.

The broadcast is a great board we started using that and the 360 FS an BS are fun, we are working on doing those without the rope now....

I was wakesurfing before they even made boards specifically for it, its fun to just carve around.

Definitely, I was (trying) to use my real surf board before anyone was producing commercial boards for it too. For those of us that are in fact surfers, this is about as good as it gets once you move away from the ocean.... I love it.

Thanks for all the comments. There is a place around our lake where you can rent wakesurfboards for just a day for $20. I am definately going to try it out. If anyone knows of any deals on wake surfers online or around Knoxville, TN let me know---

i love wakesurfing. i jus got a phase 5 this summer and it is awesome. i ride behink an x-star so it kicks a pretty good wave. i think the phase 5's are a lot better then any of those longer surfboard kinds like the hyperlite ones. the phase 5 allows you to do more tricks. it is harder to stay in the wave but it is a lot better once you learn how to ride.

wake surfing is so much fun. it's a great thing to do when the water is to choppy to wakeboard.
Alan C - You are going to want as much weight as possible, the bigger the wake, the better the ride. I was riding last week behind a Supra Gravity Games, with full ballast, and 8 ppl in the boat, if you the the ppl sitting in the right spot in the boat, it was kicking up almost shoulder height wake,so awesome. the key is to get ppl to sit on the back of the boat, on the back corner gives the best wake. almost makes it easy to jump off and tackle the rider too, Twisted Evil

WakeDiva,

Ryan at Amerian Boat Center hooked us up with the Liquid Force Skimskate. Wakesurfing is so awesome! I actually pulled a 180 the first run (and not on accident). The skimskate is really locks on to the "sweet-spot" and lets you ride forever. Just the other day Ryan let us try out the O'Brien Alias. Thats an awesome board, but its a big difference than the LF. I can't wait to go again and tear it up!

i wouldnt want to try it behind an outboard because sometimes you get very close to the back of the boat. i think it would be kinda dangerous.
