Hey ladies and gents, I'd likesome ideas on my front roll problemaire. Background: I ride 75 feet, 23 miles do huge grabs 180s and got the basics down tight (steve mckinley and dustin oferral said so) so cheers to em. I got a backroll 3 weeks ago.. Got a scarecrow dialed in 3 days since first landings and I had landed two frontrolls last week.. (steep learning curve)
The trick info:
I ride in with a wide progressive but aggresive cut.. rocking up to get huge pop on a trip flip edge. Pop not an issue here I think. I look down between my legs and get fine rotation, I land on the board.
The problem:
I land shifty.. almost doing a scarecrow but doing maybe 3 quarters of the 180 when I'm coming down.. Now everythings fine until that 3 quarters mark. I think it may be because I try to spot the landing but i dunno. Also everytiem I bag myself extremely hard and I want to spew.
Now the two I landed were not so high.. maybe leaving a bit early on the wake, but still liek 3/4ths the way up and really fast rotations..
Can anyone help b4 I go to the 2nd day of clinic tomorrow?

K, that's exactly what happens when you learn the crow before the front roll.
Cause of Problem: My guess is that you are throwing the move out the back like a scarecrow. Your body will naturally open up toward the boat when flipping that way, I believe that's how the elephant was born.
Solution: Wait longer to start your flip, so you get more of a straight up pop than a total trip across the wake. Once you are in the air, make sure you throw your head straight down, not diagonal as you would with a crow. Concentrate on really keeping the handle down by your lead hip, on crows that are thrown out the back, the handle is usually up by or above your head, which will open you up...which is what you're doing now.
If you're having trouble still, try grabbing the board indy, that seems to help me keep mine more of a true front roll.
Tip: If you get that dialed, try doing your scarecrows the same way. I learned a front roll first, then to learn a crow, I just did a front roll to a late 180. Having the ability to do crows both over the top (front roll style) and out the back is rare and will help give you more air control for other moves. |

Another idea might be to keep the handle in closer and throw it back towards the wake as you land so that you can get over your toes, edging away from the boat. Basically, move the handle back towards the wake like you have to do on your big half cabs.
Personally, when I take my front rolls too big I have problems b/c most of my straight air toe jumps are wake-to-wake. When I take front rolls too big, I'm not prepared for the big landing b/c I couldn't land that far out in the flats on a straight air. I have to work on that. Good luck... |
