My boat ran like crap yesterday Sad It ran rough and when you went to take off it chug around and try to die ( sometimes it would die ). We adjusted the idle screw to idle it around 750 rpm's. Didn't seem to help. How do you adjust the choke settings(the round part w/2 wires to it?) if that has anything to do with it? Or does the round piece w/2 wires to it have anything to do with my problem? Maybe I need to rebuild it?
Opinions please.

if you don't know what you are doing don't start playing with the carb settings.

go to the ramp and start the boat and leave it on the trailer. after a minute of running, feel the choke heater (round with the siliconed wires in your photo.) it should be warm. if not you might have a wirirng issue or a bad element, but i doubt it.

if the choke housing is cold. kill the motor. remove the cover and flame arrestor. the choke flap should be starting to open.

start with the simple stuff..... fuel and spark, but it sounds like bad gas to me.

How old is the carb. If it hasn't been regularly fogged as part of the winterization process the rubber skirt on the accelerator pump could have dried out and cracked. For my Rochester Quadrajet a kit to replace it was about $25 at the local boat dealer. You could get the shop manual for the motor and try yourself if you're mechanically inclined at all or try the local repair shop and hope they have a decent turnaround time.

tryan, I thought the same about bad gas also, because it ran good a couple weeks ago. Should I try and burn out most of what I have and then start refilling or just mix in fresh fuel now?

Steve, I fogged the carb when I stored it last winter. I don't know for sure about the previous owner though. How hard are they to rebuild? Turn around time at a marina is usually a couple weeks or more.

For the mechanically inclined with a decent manual, it should be an afternoon project. Cleaning is the most important step. There are a lot of little passages in the carb that if clogged will severly affect performance.

I would also check your water separating fuel filter, over time they can eventually fill with water and not let any gas to pass through. Maybe try siphoning any water you can from the bottom of the gas tank. I agree with Boardrditup, about the carb work. My boat ran much better after a thorough carb cleaning. Be careful, you will be working with gas and with what controls how that gas gets to the motor.

I had a sim problem w/ my boat thought it was the carb but it was a loose screw that was cutting into a plug wire when the engine box was down we removed the screw and replaced the wires and plugs and the boat ran like new Laughing

Hey CHiLi DaWg,

I sure do agree with tryan, do simple things first like clean fuel filters...

Let us know what you find

OK, here's the update. I have a realtor friend who used to be a mechanic. He came out with me yesterday and looked it over. He adjusted the air flow on the carb and it ran good again. Tomorrow we will ride behind it again and see how things go.
