Don't see too many people throwing ts backrolls, I have tried the front roll several times, have gotten around but never landed it.

Give me some opinions.....

In my opinion, toe side back rolls require a much stronger toe side cut into the wakes than a toe side front roll (or scarecrow). I've been doing toe side back rolls for years, but just learned the front this year. However, I already find the front much easier to throw!
It's the same difference between a hs backroll and a tantrum. A hs back roll you edge all the way through the wake, instead of the tantrums "trip flip" motion. It just turns out that a lot of people find the tripping motion easier from the toe side since the rope naturally wants to "untwist" you and pull your back shoulder around a little.
The guy that taught me the front roll simply said, "Edge into the wake and when you hit it, look under your lead shoulder!"
Good luck.

I'm not much help in this discussion, cuz I haven't tried the frontroll yet, so I can't compare the two, but I learned the backroll first.

since both of you guys have done ts backrolls, what is the key to the stronger ts cut? I currently get decent pop ts and have decent air on my front roll attempts and have enough time to grab my ts 180 attempts, am I ready to do the ts backroll? As of yet, have not tried it.

Larkin,
I'm a bad guy to ask, since I learned the trick on a trick ski years before I learned it on a wakeboard. Um.. I guess the key is just like on a hs backroll... Just edge all the way through the top of the wake before you try to throw the trick. Don't flatten the board out or ease up on your approach to the wake. I try to keep my weight fairly centered over my board and stand tall (ie chest out).
I used to find it easiest to let go with my back arm around 3/4 the way through the trick to keep my shoulders from opening up to the boat (and getting pulled to revert) until you get the hang of it. It's almost easier to learn a ts roll to revert first, since you just keep both hands on the handle and the rope will pull you around.
As well, you want to concentrate on landing with the board on edge (ie. continue to edge away from the wake toeside when you land). Of course, this should be a focus when you are just doing your toe side wake jumps too...

Great advice, finally someone else that thinks the same way as me with this trick.
Keeping your hands on the handle will make you spin faster if you let go too soon your rotation will slow way down and you will wreck yo self.. so like bradb said if you are going to let go with the back hand don't let go until you can at least spot the landing or are at the 3/4 mark. I also recommend doing the TS roll to revert to start as you can keep both hands on the handle and come around super easy. Landing on you HS edge is always easier than tryn to get over your toes to land on the TS edge. IMO

I've never done the TS roll to revert, I guess cuz I always let go w/ my back hand. The biggest advice that helps me on this trick is to really make yourself wait to start the rotation. I know I'm worried about getting all the way around, but you have so much more time in the air if you ride it all the way up. Feels WAY better..

Ts backrolls are fun, ive only landed a couple.

learnt them in two sets though, just went out and had about 10-15 goes in each set. take a pretty strong cut into the wake, wait until you get your pop and then throw it by pushing your chest up (trying to increase your pop, rather than kill it by throwing your head back)

After this, comes the time where, like everyone has said, drop your back hand. this is where it gets interesting, I found letting go about 2/3's the way round whas when i got them the closest, but you'll want a few goes and someone in the boat to help you most likely. Probably best to leave it later if possible.

On landing, i butted it out quite a few times before finally landing. You want to try to keep your weight on your toes riding away from the wake.. when you get it, it will most probably be easy as, but i had plenty of stacks like i said learning it.

cheers and good luck.

well i havnt landed any flips on a wakeboard yet but i have on a snowboard. The toeside front roll is the same as a front barrel roll snowboarding so i will tell you what i did to learn that one... just really visualize the trick. make sure u can picture yourself stompin it clean. then just cruise into the wake, dont be too tense or nervous, its best if your relaxed and just havin a good time. once you get to the wake start to pop off the lip. as you get up throw your head down really fast like your tryin to grab roastbeef ( through you legs and the back of the board). this will get your rotation just perfect and chances are u will add in a stylish indy.

johnaulick, your under rotating, correct this by actually trying to overrotate the trick. Remember, you must land on your toes edging against the wake. Also, be sure not to open up too soon, it will kill your rotation...

The idea that you need a strong toeside cut is exactly right. It is amazing how strong the cut needs to be in order to have time to get around and make it to the second wake. I think I actually do them with my legs too stiff sometimes and I slip out on the landings - but that shouldn't be a problem this summer as I've identified it as something I need to work on. Letting go with your back hand is also key. Cut in with the rope slightly low, and snap it off the lip of the wake - as soon as I'm into the rotation I let go with my back hand - from there you should start to be able to spot the landing and bring the board back under you - but dont get all curled up, expecting to crash becuase if you do this, you'll never make it the whole way around. good luck!
