Well, for one your board will obviously feel a whole lot "looser" than with fins. If you are doing alot of kickers and sliders then it might be benificial to you to ride without, just depends on your shape (board). Do you have channels? How big are your fins, maybe you should get some that are a little more suitable for your style and environment. I being somewhat of a beginner always have my fins in. Just not hitting any sliders or kickers yet.

If you're a beginner it's probably a better idea to keep your fins on the board for a while. However, it's good training to ride without them on occasion to learn how to use your edges and not rely on fins. The board will be much looser in the water in this situation.

I really like the feeling of the substance with just the molded fins. Like Pat said it really makes you learn how to cut and use your rails instead of your fins to cut. Plus, it makes it much easier to do surface tricks and to pull off some sketchy landings.

What about if your board only has no moulded fins, what's it like to ride finless on them?

I´ve tried to ride with no fins on my LF Team and its really tricky. It has 6 fins and almost no profile. I can ride without the midle fins but without is kinda hard. But its cool to learn it without too.

I ride my Premier 140 with fins, but they are 0.7's - about the same height as the molded in fins. Great for tracking and I can still break loose when desired.

So the question is: does your board have molded in fins; and are you a complete beginner or have you ridden for a while?

If you answer yes then no then I would say rip the fins off or find some really short fins to use - and get used to riding that way. You can always put the bigger fins back on the board. Wink

Having no fins is a bad idea. You could do it for a couple sets to help your technique but in the long run you definately need some fins on the bottom. I just have small chanels on my old fluid. When I put long .8" fins in the center it rides really well. Much better than the 1.5" fins that came with it. I woud look into doing something like that. It really allows you to progress without having to buy a new board.

My CWB came with some huge fins...2 inches or so. Maybe that explains my propensity to face plant when try to do surface 180s at any speed faster than 15 mph.

Wakebrad, dude, I don't think you really know what you are talking about.

Finless is a decision that riders make on preference. On many boards, I have found that better riders choose to ride finless.

why???????

MaddogMoney, although 2" fins are pretty huge, you shouldn't be planting. It may make it harder to get to a butterslide, once you're there you should be ok.

kswiss,
I just measured...the fins are 2.5 inches. The board has a pretty good edge (it's not rounded) and has channels. I think I may try it finless (if I ever get out the lake). If it's too loose after a few tries, I may pick up some shorter fins.

My board has 2 small channels, and I tried riding it finless, and it was somewhere around impossible. It was fun tough, doing all sort of butterslides gave me some insight on how to do those goddamn handlepasses! But wake jumps were about impossible to do, I had absolutely 0 tracking. I'm wondering if I should buy a new board or just a set of fins... I had been planning on a new board... Ahh decisions!
