I plan to move to Maui this summer and was wondering if anyone had info on reasonable rent and job availability in the tourism business. Obviously I would like to be close to decent surf. any help would be much appreciated, thanks-smig

You are moving to Maui? Here's my advice. I just spent an hour shovelling my driveway. You got some balls asking for advice about moving to Hawaii..........

I would think long and hard about that one. If it is a necessity move then good luck, and have fun. Hawaii is like NYC, great place to visit, crappy place to live.

1. The cost of everything is outrageous as everything is an import.
2. You are isolated. it costs a fortune to go anywhere outside of your own state.
3. You are an outsider and always will be and will always be treated as one.

Dont get me wrong, the idea of living in tropical paradise is awesome!! However, the reality isnt so cool after the newness wears off. A friend and I alway had the grand idea of moving to Hawaii and surfing every day after work. he went into the military and was stationed there. He was so stoked!! When he arrived he said it was the most amazing place he had ever been. In two months he was cursing that place and couldnt wait to get of that island. This is from somene who was OBSESSED with Hawaii.

My advice is learn japanese. Every other fregan person there is japanese. I think hawaii gets more tourism from japan every year than the states here.

Yep, you will most likely always be a holly. Try to make friends with some local folks - but always respect their turf (and surf). Also, don't piss off any Samoans Wink

Hawaii is kind of screwed....all the nice property is owned by rich outsiders who don't really need to work to live there....all the people who live there can't really find jobs other than in the crappy (AKA: Low paying) hospitality
business.....add in the high cost of living and its kind of a weird situation out there......maybe I am just talking out
my arse since I have never been there.

I don't think the cost of everything is outrageous... You can get a burger for $1 over there just like on the mainland. I had a friend that lived 3 blocks off Waikiki beach and rent for a (kinda small but nice) place was $700 a month. You can surf, snorkel, bike, swim, run for free... you can go from one side of the island to the other for a couple of bucks via the bus system. I guess if you get into the "touristy" things you can defintely deplete your pocketbook!!!

and yes... learn Japanese!

CB, you do pronounce every vowel. If you say haole fast it comes out like "howlie".

Chavez, you can't expect a surfer not to break out Hawaiian spellcheck on you! Recognize! Mr. Green

Good luck, most people there work 2 jobs just to survive. I have three uncles and cousins there. You might want to learn pigin (sic) English ASAP. Check out Kihei or upcountry. Best surf is at Hookipa but you might get your arse kicked. Just remember, there is a reason most locals want to leave to the mainland. Oh, and kiss wakeboarding goodbye in Maui (No rivers)

Kehei is nice , but it's huge on tourism/tourist.
Paia is off the beaten path and a nice place too.
Doesn't take very long to travel the entire island. It's expensive to live there, nothing is cheap when it comes to housing, but at least there's a Costco.
Oh yeah....I hope you like Spam Wink
