Ok, I'm looking at torque differences between these two. HP-wise, it's only 15 ponies, but the scorpion is rated at 365 ft-lbs of torque, which is an increase over the MAG MPI. Question is, whats the torque rating on the MAG MPI? I'm finalizing the order today, and I'm trying to justify the upgrade, since merc is offering a $500 rebate... I just dont see any published numbers on the lower-rated engine.

Anyone?

If the two engines produce their listed peak horsepower at the same rpm (probably close since they have the same application), you can calculate the difference in torque at that point.

torque = hp * 5252 / RPM.

You can always alter the torque by changing the gearing (or prop pitch) and thus changing the RPMs. You can't change the horsepower though. So, what you really care about anyway is horsepower.

salmon_tacos,
ok here are my calculations:
Black scorpion:
HP=330
torque=365
x=RPM

where 365=330 * 5252/x

This calculates x to be 4748.38 RPM, which sounds right at approx 4800RPM.

That being said, I apply the following to the MAG MPI:
HP=315
torque=y
RPM=4748.38

where y=315 * 5252/4748.38

Now y=348.41 ft-lbs of torque.

so, x-y=16.59 ft-lbs difference in torque.

No wonder mercruiser doesnt publish the numbers. Synchrotec it is!

Ruune,

I guess that's a good approximation but obviously we are assuming a lot of things. Just based on experience, I would guess that the difference in torque is a bit smaller, maybe more like 12-15 lb-ft. What you really car about is the torque curves and the area under them. They never publish those though.

What's the price difference? Unless there is a big difference in reliability, warranty, resale, or something else, I'd probably just go with the cheaper option.

My 220hp Merc gets my...

(3500 lbs of dry weight + 300 lbs. of fuel + 700 lbs. of ballast + 800 lbs. of people) =

5300 lbs. of boat plus a wakeboarder

...up on plane quickly and without any drama. The plate on my outdrive and the prop help out a lot.

As long as you have the TAPS to make planing easier when it's really weighted down, I don't think you'll have to worry about power with either engine.

the price diff is $2300, and yeah you're right about the curve. I dont know about the difference in reliability, etc. but I'm under the impression that scorp has a diff intake manifold and a 90mm throttle body. Still 2300 is too steep for a couple of performance parts and probably an ignition map.

I just called Damon at the ski dock and I'm going w/ synchrotec instead. That w/ 315hp should be able to push the 22v just fine.

I do have TAPS2 and you're right about power.

I spoke to my merc mechanic about the differences between the motors and he said the torque diff would be very small, if any. I got the 350 Mag and it has tonnes of balls for by V210. The only upgrade I would consider would be going to the 6.2MX, that would have a lot more torque.

Make sure you get a proper sized Acme prop, they make much more difference than an engine upgrade IMO. The technical guys there are really good tell them the boat and application and they will size the right one for you.

Ralph, thats what I figured... I'm going w/ the MAG MPI and the synchrotec transmission, which will give more torque at the prop than the scorp w/o synchrotec. All Tigés from '03 (maybe '02?) on come with acme CNC-milled props. Synchrotec boats come w/ a 4-blade, and non-synchrotec boats come w/ a 3 blade.

Ruune, we are running the 350 MAG MPI in our '03 Centurion Eclipse promo boat. The engine is ok for skiing in this boat, but if we ran weighted down very often I would definately want a bigger engine. We would definately go to the 6.2MX in the future, not sure of the price upgrade for you though. We are also running a 3 blade Acme.

NHeckerson, yeah... I'm planning on putting in some weight, so I went ahead and opted for syncrotech w/ a 4 blade acme.

I had the same decision... I went with the Merc MX.6.2L Black Scorpion 340hp.... It comes standaed with 3 year warranty... it is designed for torque... and has the $500 rebate... once you add 2 years extended warranty to the 5.7Mag... 5.7 Blsk Scoripion... or the 6.2L.... it is the same price as the 340 6.2L.....

I dont think there is any torque difference between the 5.7MAG and 5.7Blk Scorpion... for thos ethat want torque... you go to the 6.2L... the thing is... with the rebate... no one would ever go for the 6.2L 320hp... because it is the same upgrade cost to go to the Black Scorpion 6.2L.... that is what I went with.... worked out to less than $500 more than the 5.7 blk scorpion...

If i would have stayed in the 5.7L class... I would have gone to the MAG350... since there is no low end torque difference between the 5.7's....

Hope this helps

Good luck!

the MAG MPI has a 3 year warranty standard. I dont know if this is a Tigé thing or not, but it's standard w/ that option.

i was talked out of buying the scorpion buy the dealer. he falt out told me it's not worth the difference in performance numbers. what is it a $3k-4k difference for 15 more hp? go with that gear reduction tranny (syncrotech) and a nice 4 blade prop. you won't be dissapointed. Smile you can gas that biatch all summer with 3-4k you'll have saved.

wakefreak, wakefreak... dealer told me the same thing... plus thats what he runs himself, and I've driven his weighted and unweighted. more than enough power! The synchrotech option comes w/ an acme 4-blade prop, so thats an added bonus. Order went in yesterday for my 22v- Red hull with a black panel on the side, black tower, and black windshield. Black tandem axle trailer too!

Have fun with the new boat. For those that don't know... in the Mercruiser Line... the 6.2L will put out approx 50-60 foot pounds of torque more than the 5.7L.

No difference in torque between the 5.7MAG vs 5.7 Black Scorpion .
No difference in torque between the 6.2L vs 6.2 Black Scorpion.

Standard Merc warranty on the 5.7MAG, 5.7 Black Scorpion and 6.2L are 1 year you can buy additional warranty from about $1000 up.

The 6.2LMX Black Scorpion comes with 3 year warranty.

All the Black Scorpions have a $500 rebate too...

I am in Canada... so it may be different where you are...

So in my case... My goal was hole shot (10-12 people always on the boat with ballast) and warranty... So to achieve my goals... the 6.2L MX Black Scorpion was the answer for me.

I did have to put my foot down with the Manufacturer though.... they wanted me to go with the MAG or 5.7 Black Scorpion...

I told them the exact same thing as all of the above... and the cost out of my pocket for upgrade motor and warranty minus the rebate... was the same to upgrade from the MAG to the 5.7 Blk Scorpion to the 6.2L MX Black Scorpion... (the 6.2L non Scorpion made no sense as it would have been about $1000 more... to buy additional warranty.. and did not have the rebate!)

Have fun in the new boat.... Nice colors you picked... I went with ALL RED!
