Any tips on performing a Butterslide and/or Butterslide 180 without the obnoxious faceplants? Where do I start out on the wake, etc. I have been doing them when the boat first starts out at 10-18mph, however once I am up to speed I can't seem to try it without faceplanting.

If your rideing a board with fins you could take them off to kinda get a feel for it...

othor than that...

bend your knees, and apply a little weight on your heals... for the 180 do the same as butter slid, just instead of pulling the handle to the middle of you pull it to your othor hip and the boat will pull you around.

How large are the fins on your board?

Also what helped me alot was having the binding positioned with a wide and neutral stance, what I mean by neutral is both left and right binding equal distance from the tip and tail of the board. This makes it easier to ride on the middle of the board and helps to keep the fins less of a factor... I was riding a hydryoslide with a 2 inch fin... hope this helps!

Hey gmarkham1,

My entire family learned on a Hydroslide - I was picking it up the other night to re-arrange storage and golly gee - its a bit heavy! But hey, we all got up, got our basics down and had ALOT of fun!

It is easy when you first are getting up b/c the boat speed, and therefore board speed is low and the water is "soft." You can duplicate slow board speed by shooting out on either edge away from the wake and then flattening out. You will notice, and may have noticed already, that for a couple of seconds your board speed will be faster then the boat and the line will slack some. At this point when your board speed is down it should be fairly easy to do a surface 180. Also even out the weight on your board and lean back some to avoid those faceplants.

It also helps to pull the rope to your rear hip using the rear arm..ie riding left foot forward, use your right hand to pull the handle to your right(rear) hip. When you start to feel the board break loose & the back end of the board starts to swing, turn your hips and shoulders into the direction you want the board to go.

I learned 180's out in the flats then had no trouble on the lip of the wake. the big 2" fins on most beginner boards make it harder to learn. dont be afraid to take the fins off and practice a couple times in the flats.

I also highly recommend a good helmet like the pro tec. It doesn't hurt nearly as much when you face plant. My wife got a concussion first time she tried the butter slide

When I first did them, I found it easiest to edge from the middle of the wake (on your heelside edge) slowly. Then, instead of going down the wake, slow down a bit, and you should be able to feel the fins/edge of the board lose some of it's grip. Then just bring your back foot forward and pretend you're double skiing.

I learned them in the middle of the wake to start with the boat going really slow. Just make sure you are leaning back when you start the spin.

voodoo1, I learned them by starting from the inside of the wake. I ride left forward, so as you start to crest the wake (on the left side for me), you only have to turn slightly to slide the board. That way you can get the feel for the fins breaking loose, if you are running large fins. If you have molded in fins, I would do what DRAGON88 siad and take the center fins out.

I would do what everyone has said so far and then I'd like to add everything that has been said so far. I don't see much point in repeating over and over what everyone has already said.
