EVER WONDER
Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?
Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"?
Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?
Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?
Why is it that to stop Windows 98, you have to click on "Start"?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made
with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?
When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it?
Why didn't Noah swat those twomosquitoes?
Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?
You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't
they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!
Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?
If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? |

Funny thing about those "black boxes" they have on airplanes--I read that they're actually painted orange. _________________ How do you apologize to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough. |

if u ever have a campfire, you'll notice as you burn the wood that it like burns in squares/rectangle shapes. its pretty weird. none of my science teachers know.. |

i heard that those little black boxes on planes are REALLY expensive, and that's why they wouldn't be able to make the whole plane out of it. |

Planes aren't made out of the Black Box material since the plane would be too f'n heavy to get off the ground...not to mention that it would be extremely expensive. Also, black boxes are so strong because the thickness of the walls is almost the same as the interior dimensions of the box. If you made an airplane with 5ft thick walls...well...not good. |

The black box's are fluro orange so you can find them in the wreckage. They are heatproof and they have shock resistant foam on the inside to protect the data recorders.
Aubs, I know EXACTLY what mean about the squares on the wood in the campfire. If nobody else has seen them.... They must either not camp out a lot, or make their fires out of twigs or something. Why does it do that? dunno, possibly because the wood shrinks as the sap tried out of it, and it breaks into those lines? _________________ Terminate high thinking |

I think the squares Aubs is referring to are the shapes left on the outer part of the wood as it burns. like if you put out a fire the charcoal on the outside of the log is broken up into squares. Am I right Aubs?
As for why, I have no freakin idea |

Fire follows what it's burning, if you lay the wood in a square it will burn in a square. Try this, take a piece of paper and light the center. It burns out in a circle. Also, when we make camp fires we make a Teepee like structure that also burns outward evenly. If your talking about why a round log becomes square while it's burning, that probably has to do with the material properties and the way ash falls off. Also how the flame is, if you turn the log right you can keep it round.
Also, there is no reason cold water would boil faster that hot water. Come on guys, I know your smarter than that!!

That's kind of a trick. In most cases cold water will freeze faster but under certain conditions hot water can. When water changes from a liquid to a gas it carries a bunch of heat away. Since hot water does this more, the liquid that turns to a gas will take some of the heat away and it may freeze faster. Additionally, since some mass has evaporated the mass is less which also helps.
But, I think that is cheating, if you seal the containers then the cold water will always freeze first.

Otto - Here is another case where hot water freezes faster:
Take two ice cube trays, fill one with cold water, one with hot.
Sit them in a (non frost free) freezer.
The hot one will most likely freeze first. Why? because being hot, when it is set on the layer of ice or frost in the freezer, it will slightly melt the ice/frost beneith it. Therefor it will sit in a slight 'hole' in the ice. This melted water will then quickly re-freeze, albeit around the base of the ice cube tray. Anyone who knows about the dynamics of heat transfer would then be able to tell you that due to the surface area of the ice which is now touching the 'warm' tray, this tray will loose heat faster than the 'cold' tray, which doesn't have as much surface area touching the ice/frost.
I hope this makes sense guys, by the way, it has been tested and works, but its gotta be a non-frost-free freezer, for obvious reasons. _________________ Terminate high thinking |

that makes sense c-minded.
otto- i was thinkin cold would boil faster because if the answer was obvious why woud she ask the question. also i thought cold might boil faster because the molecules arent moving as quickly and maybe they couldnt dissipate the heat as quick.
but im probably wrong. |

Wes,
It's one of those common myths, like how you eat 7 spiders in your sleep, how you can only stand eggs up on a certain day, etc... It probably came around because the time difference isn't really that long, it is surprizing how fast cold water boils. Let's say you got cold water at 4 C and hot water at 37 C, now to get the water to boil you have to raise the temp to 100 C. You can figure out how much energy it takes to do this by multiplying the mass by the specific heat by the temp. difference. So if you have a half gallon, the 4 C water needs 761 kJ and the hot water needs 499 kJ. If your applying 3200 W, the cold water will boil it about 4 minutes and the warm in about 2.6, so the difference is only a minute and 20 seconds. One thing though is that the heat transfer rate depends on the temperature difference, so the cold water will initally have a higher transfer rate, until it heats up, but because it will still take some time to heat up to the temperature of the warm water, it will always take longer.
