hey dude im new too. I found the one thing that helps me is pull the handle to your hips. Once you get over the wake it gives you some rope to play with while you get back in/on balance. Trust I know. The faceplants have been a common occurence for me.

ive never had problems either when i cross the wake going to the out side of the wake i cut a little bit harder to get more traction so i dont slip out or anything like that.. and going back in the wake i just bend my knees not to pop when i dont want to pop

Yeah, whenever I cross the wake it's a faceplant. Maybe I'm leaning forward to far, and my legs aren't stiff. When I land I tend to shift my weight to one side of the board when I should be evening out.

When you cross the wake you need to commit. Get on an edge and then hold that edge all the way until you're outside. Make sure that you have good form when riding - your back should be very straight with your hips in and knees bent. Practice letting go with one hand and then bending down and touching your board. This will help you center yourself over your board. Bend down by bending your knees, not bending at the waist. With this form you should be able to ride comfortably even in choppy water. The handle should be down near your hips not way out in front of you - otherwise it will pull you forward to a faceplant.
Here's an example of good form - Shane Bonifay at the X Games - he's just leaving the dock so he's leaning back a little but you can see the handle position and how straight his back is, yet he's completely relaxed.

| try leaving your healside wake and reentering it, thats how i learned back in the day just make sure to lean back a little bit when you are goin out, try inside out jumps every once and a while too to learn how to "pop". o yeah and what kinda board are you usin. I started on a skurfer style and that was a bitch to get out of the wake

How you leave the wake is how you land. It doesnt matter if your butt is on the water when you are cutting in- if your board is flat when you leave the wake, the line will naturally pull you forward, so your board will not be on its back edge when you land.
Most newbs flatten out before they hit the wake, thats why you will be proned to the dreaded faceplant. Just stay relaxed, hold your edge up the wake, nothing too agressive but make sure your heels are dug in and your board is at a pretty sharp angle out of the water. Stand tall as you LEAVE the wake, not any earlier, and you will get popped up. Then just land heel heavy and ride away from it.

ya dude just keep the handle at your waist because your waist is your center of gravity.

Body positioning is alot of it, the other part is mind control. If u think u can u can. I had to get behind a jet ski to get over the massive down side syndrom. Don't look down u r body will follow u r head and bam eyes open and full of water. The jet ski with a small wake really helped me in my head with the mind part. One pull behind it and I had it. Just hold a consistant edge and try to look at the shoreline. Hope this helps dude, it helped me alot when I first started.
Also try bending u r knees so that the board stays in contact with the water instead of skipping off the wake.

Heynewbwaker,
Here's one, SLOW DOWN and just play around inside the wake until you're really comfortable, then, keeping boat speed down try cutting out to the flats, ride out there for a while - remember, it's not a race...you're trying to get comfortable with board control. carve around out there - it's great fun.... As others have suggested, stay upright with the handle close to you, don't hunch over like you're my age (50) because sure enough - where you look is where you're gone go - in this case, faceplant! Stand up, look up. For the first few times just cut toward the wake with not alot of speed and ride on over it, if you're not going fast, you'll probably make it, if you're knees bend, hey, so be it - you'll need to correct this once you start jumping, but first things first, GET COMFORTABLE...the good news is YOU'VE GOT A GREAT ATTITUDE, so just keep doing it...
Wes

If you are regular (left foot forward) the most common problem is that most people are naturally right handed. the way this will affect you is that you will pull naturally more on this arm. keep your arms in and low. as you cross the wake keep the pressure on your left arm barely gripping at all with your right. if you are starting to jump the wake then slapping the you want to let go with your right arm on landing. the pull of the boat will correct you.
hope this helps. if your goofy then some of this still applies.
good luck
