Fraidy hole looks pretty good. We're a little itchy after working at the house today...wonder why.

I measured our countertops and walkways in the kitchen. Our countertops are 37" tall and the raised part of the island is 43". I'm 6'0" and my wife is 5'8" and we don't notice them being any higher or lower than most counter tops. I would probably go with 38" if that makes the countertop/window sill transition easy.
Our walkways around the island are 5' wide. I would try to go at least 4' or 4'6" as it makes it easy for 2 people to move around in the same area or easy to walk through if the dishwasher is open.
The low part of our island is 3'5" x 8'5". The depth could be less and still be just as functional as the back is hard to reach and doesn't get much use. We went with the elevated bar as short barstools are harder to find and we felt like the lower part already had sufficient surface area. Also, I like to stand while I eat if I'm in a hurry and usually stand at the end of the bar as the elevated surface is nicer for standing.
We installed a pot filler over the stove which is convenient, but I don't feel like we would miss it that much if we didn't have it.
I would recommend a 2nd sink if you have room. When my wife and I are both cooking, I use the island sink while she either uses the main sink or has dishes in it.
Our fridge is 15' from our stove/oven and my wife has never complained about the distance, so I wouldn't put too much stock in the kitchen work triangle unless you're running a commercial kitchen.
Here's a pic that shows distances a little better:

Awesome...thanks for the feedback and checking things out. That helps to put it in perspective.
On your cabinets, after they glazed did they do a clear coat? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Cabinets are glazed. I don't think there's a clear coat over the glaze. |

Watch out on putting counter tops at non standard heights if you are going to have free standing appliances the height will be off. Yes, good point. I've been doing a little reading about that and how to handle it. We'll only have a dishwasher as freestanding and impacted by counter heights. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Siding is progressing, among other odds and ends. We managed to get the garage insulation done this weekend and this next week, hopefully exterior doors go in and patios get poured. Once the patios are done, brick can be installed.

Around here, walls that are adjacent to living space have to be sheetrocked and taped for a firewall. Ceiling too. |

It's looking great.
I don't know how I missed this before. You are doing two single car garage doors? Is it too late to change. It might look better but they are a pain in the ass. Everyone person I know that has the separated garage doors wishes they would have done one double or an oversized double. _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

That is code around here too. If I were building, I'd also use larger than 1/2" and double the sheetrock layer to provide more sound and temperature protection between the garage and the house. _________________

Thanks. It's actually 3 singles. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Well in that case, I would have done two oversized doubles. |

If we didn't want the particular configuration we're going for, I'd have probably opted for two doubles. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

a buddy of my ended up doing that ont
he built this monster place out of town, four singles doors and a separate man cave garage for his "special" car. He ended up doing exactly that, made the four doors into two oversized doubles. I'm telling you it looks great but the single doors suck. It cost a bundle to re do the doors after it was all finished I'm sure. stone, stucco etc.
Do it now and it shouldn't cost you anything really. Just think of the cost savings by not having the wife take off a mirror or scraping the car all the down the side because those single doors just aren't big enough... haha _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

I suggested early on using at least one double door if for no other reason than when you want to back a trailer in. Our main garage has a 10' and an 18' door. Putting a max width 8'6" trailer into the 10' door (which is more like 9'6") doesn't leave much room for error.

2 doubles is much wider than 3 singles, so without adding to the foundation and re-framing the garage, I don't think that's an option.
He could probably do 1 double and 1 single, but 3 singles is more aesthetic, which is probably why he chose that in the first place since 3 singles is probably the more expensive option. |

Yeah, it was both aesthetic and more fitting to our planned uses. We wanted the extra room between the two parking areas, and wanted a separate door for the third bay which will basically end up being a shop. IIRC if we did a double door to cover as big of a space as the first two singles do, it was also a custom door.
We've pulled our vehicles in and backed a trailer in a couple times already, and I'm not sure it will ever be an issue. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

We have both, a garage with a double door and a garage with 2 single doors. We much prefer the single doors to the doubles. It provides much more room between the two vehicles so there are less door dings. backing the boat in the garage with the single doors you have to really take your time because there is probable only 2 inches to spare on either side, but that really only happens a couple of times a year. _________________ Brent B

Brick has been started and hopefully exterior doors go on this week. It took a while for the front and rear entry doors to come in, but they're here now. The weather doesn't look like it is going to cooperate much this week, but hopefully some good progress can still be made.

Brick is almost done and the doors are starting to go in. This week the weather is supposed to be really nice, so hopefully a lot of progress can be made.

They got the brick done, after having to wait for one last delivery of brick that was out of stock. Now the focus is on finishing a few interior items, and sheet rock as far as the inside is concerned. The exterior is being trimmed out and prepped for paint. We're liking the way the trim looks and anxious to see it painted. We decided to do board and batten around the whole house at 2' centers. We also decided to trim out the transition from the shake shingle look in the gables and the board and batten siding.

Sheet rock is underway. It's fun to see the spacial feeling in the house change as the walls are closed up.

Tape, mud and texture is done. We're about to be really busy as we go into this finishing stage.

We're getting close to the end, but still a fair amount of work to do. We had final grading done in front by the house and the driveway cut in. We may do more dirt work later if there is time and money left in the budget, but we think we've got the major part of it complete. Concrete has been completed, as well. Interior final touches are in the works; closets are being built out and we will start painting the rooms as those are completed. Vanities and tile work will follow, then kitchen cabinets. Some exterior items are also being finished up, including trim, garage doors, well pump, electrical service and gas service.

All the closets are finished on the boys' end of the house, plus we got paint prep done, so we did our first painting in those rooms this weekend. We'll be able to get bathrooms and trim done on that end of the house soon, which nearly finishes that side of the house.

We made some good progress this weekend and we're going to be working more during the week now that my wife and kids are out of school. If all goes as planned major progress on kitchen cabinets should happen this week. Last week, the garage doors got put in and the pantry build out was done, along with some more painting. We've also been prepping our trim for doors and baseboard.
My apologies for some of the poor pic quality.

Well, it's been a busy and productive week...hopefully we will finish what we need to today. We decided we would use some help from our contractor to put several of his guys on building the cabinet bulkheads during the week, so we could do all the trim out work. We also got a bit more painting done. We've made some good progress on this long weekend getting the cabinet bases ready for paint. Our boys have really jumped in and learned how to do the various tasks and we've really been able to work as a team. Our older son is actually working for our contractor/friend for the summer, so he was one of the guys working on the bulkheads during the week. I hope this isn't an overwhelming amount of pictures, but thought y'all might enjoy seeing all of them.

We accomplished what we set out to do this weekend, with some time to spare. All the trim work is done with the exception of the corners, which our contractor is going to finish today. We'll be prepping for paint this week and hopefully getting the cabinets painted by the end of the week or this weekend. This was a big milestone to hit in the progress of the house, for sure.

So, things are progressing quite well. In the last couple weeks we've gotten most of the rest of the house prepped and primered, as well as the bathroom vanities built, and the showers ready for tile. We've been pretty busy working there evenings and weekends, but we're making great progress. We had a few delays on getting the cabinets painted, but that should happen this week. If all goes well with the showers, they should be ready for us to start tile this weekend. We're probably only a couple weeks away from getting the house functional. Our goal is to close on this by the end of July, even if everything isn't completed. Here are some pictures of the latest work and the tile we are putting in the master shower.
