We had talked about possibly doing a GPS tracking type device on our son's car and it looks like there are quite a few possibilities out there. Have any of you used anything like the link, and have feedback you can offer?

You can track his phone already if he has an iphone.

My boys are long ways from driving, and I'm not trying to tell anyone how to parent, but maybe save the GPS option until he screws up? If I knew I were being tracked, I'd try a lot harder not to be tracked. I think when you force things on your kids it becomes parents vs. kids instead of everyone working together. Also, I think trust and responsibility go a lot further than helicopter parenting.

When I started driving, my dad laid down a few rules. The most serious of which was no drinking and driving. I was expected to not drink, but it was made certain that if I got caught drinking and driving I was pretty much f#cked until I could support myself. Waking my dad at 3am for a ride home because I was drunk was a better option than drinking and driving. I was expected to loosely inform my dad of my plans for the night and be home at a certain time. If I deviated significantly from the plans, I was to call my dad. I did plenty of dumb stuff, but I never drove drunk in high school, I never hurt anyone or myself, and I didn't get anyone pregnant.

My boys are 4 and 1, so I'll admit I have no idea what I'm talking about as a parent, just what I remember as a teenager.

agree with ohsix, save the gps for if he screws up... If he already did screw up, i would randomly check the vehicle once a month after installation. Most of the PnP systems are easy to bypass so he could leave it on go to a friends house, then flip a switch and be able to drive around off the record.

Our thinking is to go into this with him and help him understand the positive side of it, and not have this be too much about tracking him to catch him doing something wrong. The thing we like about some of the plug in units is they track speed, hard acceleration and braking, etc. It seems like those could be good tools for discussing and improving driving habits. Another thought would be that any alerts set up would go to both us parents and him. Also, it could serve as a good tool if he got in an accident or broke down and wasn't 100% sure where he was.

I'm a parent and I'm a kid of parents who gave me a lot of freedom to screw up (I didn't all that much) so I kind of ride the fence on this type of stuff because I see both sides of it pretty clearly.

If I ever decided to go this route with my son I'd do it without telling him and I'd never tell him. Then if things got bad enough as a screw up the magical parents' knowledge kicks in and he gets to learn that you can't always cover your tracks completely.

This next generation is going to be one that believes that "big brother" monitoring their movements and communications is a normal and acceptable thing. I shudder at the thought.

I understand that your pretense is that it is keeping him safe. Which is essentially the same one the NSA has been giving to us.

Okie Boarder,
Some insurance companies offer this and it will also give a discount to you if they drive good.

But I think it's Bubb Rubbing stupid to do this to your kid

Chad H, actually talked to my insurance agent about that yesterday. She told me about how the one for Progressive works and clients that have tried it. Sounds like it is next to impossible to achieve the grade they are looking for you to achieve to get a discount. LOL
