Our oldest passed his driving test this morning. He drove himself back to school. What a weird feeling of pride in his accomplishments and nervousness about his safety.

Know EXACTLY what you are feeling. I still worry about my kid driving around.

It's pretty nice to not have to be a taxi to everything though.

My kid has been driving for about 7 months now..

I am still nervous when he drives but I can now ride with him without getting hives! So the more time behind the wheel the better they get.

Insurance has been the kicker on my end. My USAA went up to 4K a year for full coverage on two old Chevy trucks. I really need to address that and find some better rates on my car insurance.

Watching you kid grow up can be just as confusing for us adults as for the kids!

He took a pretty lengthy behind the wheel training and we've let him drive us around a lot. He is a pretty good driver, which makes me feel better. But, there are definitely horrible drivers out there and he is a teenage boy...I sort of remember what that was like. LOL!

Do you have Mercury insurance in your area? I've been with them for years and even when I shop my insurance, I have yet to find better rates.

I will look them up.

I fell into the I've been with usaa so long that I just never worried about it. But to double my rates when I added him seems crazy.

I know teenagers are expensive but never thought my policy would double.

flixmaster,
I'd shop around, 4k over a year sounds like a ton unless you have had a lot of tickets/accidents in the past 3 years. Is he listed as a driver on whichever vehicle is the oldest and slowest on your policy? If not, I'd do that. Is your home/life/etc bundled with USAA? If not it may be a good time to bundle up to get those discounts.

No accidents or tickets... Ever!

He is listed on one of the cars as the full time driver.

We kept full coverage for the first 6 months just to be safe.

I need to drop that car to liability only.

I really should drop to liability on all cars.

I just can't seem to follow thru on any of it.

Well, I hope you have a long tow rope or a winch.

Because you know it's only a very short matter of time before he has that Montero buried to the frame in mud.

Just saying. I mean, I'm not speaking from any prior experience here. No way. Not me. Arrow Arrow

Could not argue more AGAINST dropping to liability on all of your cars. I understand doing it on his primary vehicle and you should do that. However, the uninsured/underinsured coverage that is party of full coverage protects you from the idiot out there who hits you and causes $100K plus in medical bills/damages to you but he only has the minimum liability coverage required by law, and no assets to collect against.

I see this fact pattern probably once a week in my law practice and it is sad when someone who has no fault of their own in the accident but they collect $25K (or $50K, depending upon the state) from the guy at fault while they have 5-6X that in medical bills, lost wages, future treatment for lifelong injuries, etc. Your medical insurance will only do so much for you in that situation and if you don't have any disability insurance you are in a really bad spot.

PLEASE don't follow through with anything other than getting just liability coverage on that one car.

LOL! Yes, we are prepared for that and fully expect it to happen.

Not sure how the insurance works in the states, but we have a friend going through something similar and it's a good thing they have the liability coverage. Basically a minor accident and now a year later the other party is claiming they are injured, haven't worked for a year and suing for $1M. It's ridiculous, but at least you know the coverage is there.

Do you guys have an umbrella policy? I would recommend looking into it. Most will cover you up to $1M. Mine costs $160 a year for the coverage.
