I bought a new directv dish for tailgating/camping. I have a couple questions. Before I post a bunch of stuff, I wanted to see if there are any gurus here that know about sats, LNBs and SWM.

churchy, just the dish? you going to stick it on a tripod or maybe fashion a mount for the truck bed?

We use a Dish Tailgater unit with the RV. But it's crazy easy because you just set it down, tell it where you are and it does the rest.

chavez, I thought you may be the guy to pipe in. I but a slimeline dish and I believe a 3lnb unit (has 4 outputs). I am planning on just grabbing on of my HR24s from the house when I leave. Do you know if I need a SWM for this? It looks like maybe I do.

That depends. You should look up the model of the LNB and see if it has the SWM built in. On the dish setup I just removed, the SWM was built in to the LNB. The LNB also was a triple with 4 outlets.

The thing about it though, is if you are only trying to get one channel... say ESPN... you likely only need to point at 1 satellite which means you really only need 1 of the outputs. The SWM just allows you to grab multiple satellites and combine it into one RG6 cable.

So, if you just point the dish at whatever sat DirecTV uses for ESPN, you should lock in. Trouble would occur if you tried to switch to a channel that was on a different sat.

Everything I am ready online makes it sounds like the SWM is built in.
