Off doing my own research but first-hand info is always helpful and more insightful. I'm looking for some details on best times to travel there, high vs. low season... best value times to go and recommendations on where to stay. Also curious if anyone has been to the Fairmont Southhampton?

ontrider, best time is September. Kids in school, water is still warm.
I've been to the Fairmont Southhampton, but just to play golf. It's one of the nicest hotels on the island, but is not beachfront if you are looking for that. Also FYI, Turtle Hill is a long~ish pitch & putt, but views were awesome and it was a fun course.
Grotto Bay and Tucker's are both very nice. Tucker's might be the best on the island.
One thing of note - even though the island is technically small, it can take a long ass time to get from one side to another. As a tourist, you can only use a scooter.
Shoot any specific questions over. If I can't answer them I can bounce them off my bud who lives on the island.

Well we decided it's too cold there in March.
I was just curious if anyone uses Orbitz for booking (iv'e booked a lot of flights with them with no issues and a few hotels in the US)
They seem to have better rates because they must buy up blocks of rooms or seats on flights - but I'm wondering if anyone has had success negotiating better prices or deals by calling the hotels directly? I don't know if this saves them commission being paid to Orbitz or similar online sites or if the sites just take a hit if the rooms aren't booked?

Would still like to do Bermuda, but it will probably be a spring or fall trip. We ended up doing 10 days in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos and loved it. Beautiful beaches and a amazing clear water. Got some snorkeling in on the reef and even got a round of golf in. Definitely recommend!

I don't see any kiteboarders?
A buddy has a condo there and loves it he doesn't kite though. The price tag has scared off a lot of my buddies I kite with so I've never been to the Turks.

Yeah, the price on some resorts is pretty ridiculous. Saw some flyers and ads for kiteboarding but didn't really get around to trying it. Probably would have been good too since it was a little windier than usual while we were there. Was also limited on my excursions as my wife is 5 months pregnant, wouldn't be doing any kiteboarding and wouldn't be happy with me taking off all day. Maybe next time!
Bam, what does a decent Kiteboarding setup run anyway? I've never tried it but have been spending more time in the summers on Lake Huron and figure that's probably a decent spot to kite since it's a big open body of water.

Like anything it can be cheap to get into. But once you are hooked, you need new kites ever couple of years, boards ect ect.
To get started, it's pretty easy to find some good packages. Best had some good deals in the fall last year. I think they were selling two kites any size, plus harness and bar for a 1000 bucks.
I buy most of my stuff online, usually last years model cause I don't need the latest and greatest.
Kite probably 450-750 bucks each last years or slightly used. You need at least two. A 9 meter and 12 meter. If you are in a light wind area a 17m
Harness 200 bucks
Board 300 you can get one for less or way more...
lines usually you can get a bar when you buy the kites, if you buy it separately that can cost 100-400 bucks
2000 bucks and you would be fully set up. Probably can do it for less if you wanted.
The expensive part are the cool trips and awesome locations you can go to.... Plus lessons. they're not cheap but I would never recommend anyone starting out without at least 3-4 lessons..

But you live in Florida. I thought, much like CA, that it is all beaches, sunshine, and booze all the time?

Perhaps you'd like a change of scenery? It's still 0 C here and We've got lots of beautiful salt-stained roads, potholes and remnants of snow piles. Would probably be a nice change from the annoyance of constant sunshine and warmth.
