My exterior outlets are also all switched by two switches in the main entry closet. This way, during holiday season, the lights can be controlled via these smart switches rather than hanging timers around the house. Additionally, each corner of the house has a receptacle in the soffit to make for easy light wiring.

I used one of my WeMo switches for this. I also have our entry and porch and pool lights on WeMos. Works great.

I've been looking a little at the whole house audio systems. I'm thinking I may want to get a main unit for sound that can have a lot of flexibility as far as sources. Any suggestions on brands/models to look at?

I love my Sonos. I only have one room set up so far, but will be adding more rooms as money becomes available.

Seems like Sonos is geared towards wireless, yes?

Yep, all the speakers are wireless, just need to be plugged into power.

I have 3 rooms with speakers and I am pretty happy with it.

I use Lutron Caseta for this same purpose. The switches are in the closet, but they are nearly never touched (instead being controlled by the whole house automation or one of our mobile devices).

I am mixed on Sonos. It is definitely a good technology, especially if you want to set up whole house audio after the walls are closed. What I don't like is the limited number of inputs, and the fact that you either choose Connect:Amp or you have to deal with bookshelf speakers and in each room.

I like NuVo, but setup is definitely not for the faint of heart (IE ... needs a professional installer).

Thoughts on running conduit rather than pre-wiring the whole house? The thinking here is to spend the money to do the conduit now and add the wire later when needed. This would also future proof the house, for the most part. If we get a conduit path and box in each room, we'd probably spend about the same as 2 cat6 and 1 RG6 drop per room, from what I've casually priced out.

Labor on conduit will be much higher than running the wires. Besides, now you are paying double on materials with little added benefit.

How far do you want to future proof is the real question here. If you go with cat 6 or better, you are already future proofed for a good long while. In the meantime, wireless just keeps getting better and better which is what I would expect the future to be anyway.

What if labor was not a factor?

Removing the labor factor, you are then paying for conduit + wire (at a later date) rather than just wire. While it future proofs you a bit, I am not convinced how far beyond cat6 the future will go, especially consider the improvement in wireless. One other thing to consider is that I imagine that your plan includes some wiring now and some later. It's much easier to do a clean install as far as cable management is concerned if it is all done at once.

Thanks all for the feedback and info. We've been working on a design with our architect for several weeks now and have it pretty nailed down. Hopefully, we'll be kicking this off soon. I'll probably do a thread to show the progress.

For any of you using a wood stove, are you using room (house) air or did you set it up with the fresh air kit?

Our zero clearance fireplace uses outside air for combustion. In our colder climate it is pretty important for optimal efficiency.
