New car in the near future

My oldest is just about to drive so I am going to make him drive the old boardstop shop suburban. But when I need a boat puller I will probably grab it from him.

I have been looking for something in the 2008-2013 year range. I need to keep the price where I will not cry if my kid dents it up in the parking lot at school.

I have looked at all the sporty sedan type cars. I like the Caddy CTS but now looking at the price range of $20-35K seems like I can get a number of sporty cars. BMW, Lexus, etc.

Anything I should look at? I have 8 months to look around and really have no idea what I am going to get.

Having zero car payments right now is really kind of nice!!!

Don't buy a G37. We are not all that thrilled with ours, except when we floor it, then woo freaking hoo, but the rest of the time it's just meh.

Just a thought - you may want to invoke the Doug Demuro Carmax Method of buying cool used cars while laying off the inevitable warranty issues on someone else.

i'd get the kid a beater, save the suburban, and get yourself something sporty if that's what you want. there's no way i'd want to trade my sporty car to my 18 year old brother (or myself as a teen) when i need to pull the boat.

You're missing the TRD badging, but I will let it slide. What year? I have a 2009 TRD Sport that I have put 100k on. All I have done is change the oil and one battery. Just changed the breaks at 100k. Plan on keeping it till 200k.

Only thing to watch for is the day time yellow running light. It runs hot and melted the yellow plastic inside the headlight. It is a known issue with Toyota.

2007 sr5 pre-runner. traded in a 2002 4runner w/ 205k on it, so not much learning curve.

prerunner is the 4wd stance w/ 2wd. fake 4wd, if you will. i don't need 4wd, but i want the look. my brother can't stomach the thought of not having 4wd, even though he knows damn well he'll never use it, so he paid extra for no reason.

So few people actually "need" 4wd. Especially down south. So many think they do it's almost comical. Might as well save the cost of it, insurance difference, and fuel economy loss. Unless you are afraid of diminished chest hair follicles. Then, be my guest.

Anyone ever been to Lake Alan Henry without 4wd? I bet they bought new tires soon after

I've been in a couple that were fairly well equipped. We got the van for the same reason you stated, but didn't find ourselves using it to its potential. We also found it limited us in other aspects, so it was not a good vehicle for us.

Okie Boarder, I get the towing thing. We don't need to tow so that doesn't really matter. Hauling hasn't changed much, but the idea of pressing a button and flipping the seats down to make room for a sheet of plywood doors closed is pretty neato I think.

But power? The new vans all have 250hp+ with the Dodge/Chrysler twins having 280+. 0-60 in under 8 seconds across the board and mid-20's combined mileage. These are no slouches anymore.

What did you have? The older vans all had like 210hp or less and their suspensions had more in common with marshmallows or old Buicks than today's cars. Laughing

I didn't like the idea of throwing a few bags of manure, getting loose soil, getting bricks, etc in the back of a van. Regardless of the convenience of folding seats down, it was a pain.

This was 10 years ago and we had the Mazda MPV, so I know the power and mileage has changed some. I've driven as new as a 2010, and I didn't feel like it was all that much different. I'm much more comfortable in a truck and it gives us what we need/want.

2011 was when pretty much everyone upgraded to the current models. Dodge/Chrysler redid interior, trans, engine (from 210hp to 280+hp), brakes, and suspension. Toyota went to the new body (as well as a new trans and suspension), and Honda did the same. Big, big differences. I think the only previous gen model that would even be remotely acceptable to us is the Odyssey as they were pretty good to begin with.

Did you say getting bricks?

LOL, don't get me wrong, we did the same thing. I just didn't like having to move stuff around and vacuum afterwards. It worked OK for us at the time, but it didn't end up being the right solution for us. It wouldn't work at all now, especially with the boat.
