Hi guys, I have been wakeboarding for a couple of months now, and one thing I noticed after most of my sessions is that my lower back hurts after riding. Most of the time it is just painful enough for me to let out a grunt involuntarily when bending over, but nothing affecting my life much. I tried doing more core exercises and deadlifts to try to strengthen my lower back, and always get the same kind of pain the next day. It goes away after about 5 days usually.

Yesterday though, I was finally getting some really good pop off the wake, and that also means harder landings. By the last pull I was barely even able to get up on the board, and I called it a day. For the rest of the day the pain was intense, I couldn't even get myself off a chair. I would get an intense pain, and my legs would give way and I would collapse back on the chair. While standing I could only keep upright. Bending over anything more than 10 degrees was out of question. Today it's slightly better, I can at least get off a chair, not without wincing in pain though.

So my question is, do you guys think it's anything serious, or just a bad muscle strain? I would like to avoid the doctor if I can, I am pretty broke this month.

Thanks for reading!

It's not about core exercise and deadlifts, it's about position.
When you ride relax your arms and roll your knees forward. Automatically your hip will come forward and your shoulders lean back, and your back will straighten. And the pain will disappear.
Pretty sure this will solve it. If not, go see a doctor Wink

(btw; dutch or belgian?)

I respectfully disagree with immediately discounting the value of strengthening your body as preventing back pain. I will let you know that I have an obvious bias because I am a gym rat and am pretty passionate about lifting.

I would NOT discount deadlifting and core exercises. If you are weak in these areas you will DEFINITELY be feeling what you're feeling. You could also have flexibility issues that are contributing to this. How tight are you? Google "back stretches" and do them. Can you stretch very far?

Body position is important, but your body needs to be strong enough to not be reacting the way it is even with poor position. May I ask how much you deadlift? How much can you low row? I would give a lot more credit to overall well being than position. A well maintained body can take TONS of abuse and feel fine. Trust me on that.

Have you ever had a back injury in the past? It may be possible you slipped a disc or something similar.

riding a wakeboard:non existent.. after a season without any issues, wakeboarding season turned into snowboarding season. after about a month i started noticing i was getting less flexible and had groin-pain after boarding. so i mentioned it to my PT and he did some test and immediately sent me to my doctor who sent me to get xrays the very same morning. turns out i have had mild hip-dysplasia since birth and the smaller joint-surface has caused wear and tear and the damages of years and years of jumping are now coming forward..
it's deteriorating pretty fast and i am looking towards double total hip replacement somewhere in the not too far future.
riding my bike is ok-ish, so is surfing and mild kiteboarding. wakeboarding (landing full impact on flat surface, popping tricks) now suddenly gives me serious pain that lasts 3 days and causes inflammation.
So i had 2 sessions this year.. Sad no more wakeboarding, no more snowboarding, no more skateboarding, no more running etc.. but it affects my daily life and my family too, and my work also a bit.

sorry for the long rant though..

latest biking clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcU0-gTHIf4&list=UUvPl2AYf6ku9wXzZLGiv3fw

and dont even remember if you saw it but i posted a winching clip too..some time ago

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry but I had some trouble logging in for a while. And nope I am neither dutch nor belgian! I just use this username due to my extreme love for tarantulas heehee.

Anyways back to my back problem, it got MUCH better over the next 2 days, and now it is mostly just a slight nagging pain that appears especially if I sit or slouch for a period of time. Strangely though, everytime I do exercises that involve the use of my lower back slightly (like squats, chin-ups or situps), the pain goes away almost completely. I am hoping on it just being a muscle strain. I'll be going back to the army in August, so if things don't get better then I will see a specialist and it'll be covered by the army *evil smile*

I'm putting off wakeboarding for the time now though, and it's killing me! So far I have taken long breaks off due to a rotator cuff tear, a concussion, and now this! And it sucks!

Past injury-wise I wouldn't say I have any, but being in a tank battalion I always had to jump off about 1.2m from the top of the tank to the ground, carrying about 20kg of load, I guess it's a possiblity my back was slowly getting killed then, but I hope not!

One thing to focus on too, your lower back is anchored by your glutes. If you have weak glutes, it wont matter how strong your core is, your spine will shift around on your hips and cause low back issues. Try really strengthening your glutes to keep a good solid foundation for your lower back.
