a couple of my classmates from law school were back in dayton for a wedding over memorial day weekend. early sunday morning they were in a wreck, and the passenger was dead at the scene. the driver just died today.
i try to avoid driving if i have even a couple beers at dinner, and i certainly don't if i'm having cocktails. that said, we all have friends or family who do drink and drive, and probably some of us drive after we've had too many drinks ourselves.
please take a second and think before you start your vehicle. a cab ride is cheap all things considered. hell, skipping the drinks at dinner once in a while and volunteering to drive isn't the worst way to spend an evening. just think about it before you go out next time. how are you getting home? have a plan. i'm tired of hearing about people dieing from this. |

Not that it matters, but were your classmates hit by a drunk driver, or were they drunk?
I did a lot of foolish things in college and drinking and driving was one of them. Luckily, I never hurt myself or anyone else. I would say teaching my kid(s) not to drink and drive is probably the most important thing they will learn when they start driving. Not drinking underage and unprotected sex are on that list, but drinking and driving is the most important IMO. Now that I'm getting old, the recovery time from drinking too much isn't worth it. I haven't had more than 4 drinks at a time since my 2nd wedding anniversary (coming up on 5th). |

ohsix - you sound like me. I will have 1 glass of wine or 1 drink with dinner when the wife and I go out for date night. I was lucky to have never been caught and to have never hurt anyone. I'll be teaching the boy the same thing. Don't do it. call a cab. sleep in the back seat of your car.
Also, hammer into their heads not to get in a car with a drunk driver. _________________ Work SUX! |

I agree fully.
Don't know if this is urban legend or not but I have heard of DUI incidents from people trying to sleep it off in their car. FWIW. _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian? |

What I understand, there are specific things you need to do, so it isn't classified as a DUI; those vary by locale.
We are teaching our boys the same sort of things. If we go out somewhere and I have a drink, my wife drives. If I've had a couple beers at home, she drives. If she wants to drink, I won't and I drive. We have also stressed that if they decide to experiment in their teen years, they can call us to pick them up any time and they won't be in trouble. We've also talked to them about watching out for their friends and not getting in the car with someone that has been drinking. We both have friends from HS that were killed by DD's. _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

Sorry to hear about your friends. The "it won't happen to me" mentality is too prevalent.
I have a good friend who will argue with me to no end that he is a BETTER driver when he is drunk. I hope I will not be burying him too early but probably will. _________________

For the life of me do not get the BETTER when drunk argument. Crazy.
I also empathize with the poor bastard who has 2-3 glasses of wine at dinner and t bones someone who ran a red light, blows .08 and is f'd _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian? |

In Texas, you can get a DWI on a bicycle or even on a horse.

I was that guy. More careful/more deliberate (but still with delayed reflexes) most certainly does not = better. Stupid. _________________ "I'm scared if I stop drinking all at once, the cumulative hangover will literally kill me." |

It really changes things AFTER it hits close to home. We become complacent in almost everything due to the "not happen to me" mentality. So sorry to hear about your friends.
I have 3 stepchildren who's father was killed in a single car accident 2.5 years ago. When you sit 5,7, & 14 year olds down one morning and tell them their father is dead, DUI brings on a whole new meaning. I will never forget the sound of my doorbell ringing at 5:15 that morning and seeing a state trooper on the other side. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/greasemonkeytv |
